Fuenteheridos lies in the heart of the Sierra de Aracena y los Picos de Aroche Natural Park. Narrow, cobbled streets and houses in the traditional local style shape the townscape. Together, they form a harmonious, cohesive group classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest. Water, architectural history and recurring festivals give the town different facets to consider when choosing your destination.

Water shapes the town

The Fuente de los Doce Caños is beside the Plaza del Coso in the centre of Fuenteheridos. Its twelve outlets supply around two million litres of water every day for the town and garden irrigation. The MĂșrtiga River also rises at the spring. At this landmark, a structure, the water supply and garden irrigation, and the river’s source come together.

The Paseo de los Poetas offers another perspective on the local water tradition. It was designed as a place to stroll and relax and includes restored irrigation channels, cascades and ponds. The irrigation channels, known as “lievas”, distribute water from the Fuente de los Doce Caños through El Ejido, La Canal and Navalonguilla. The spring and channels thus point to the importance of water distribution in Fuenteheridos, while the Paseo, with its ponds and cascades, is also described as a landscaped area for strolling and relaxing.

Townscape and architectural history

The Iglesia Parroquial del EspĂritu Santo is a Neoclassical church dating from the 18th century. It was rebuilt after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The monumental Cruz de mĂĄrmol also stands in the Plaza del Coso. It dates from May 1792 and is made of materials for which the quarries of Fuenteheridos are known.

The town’s religious heritage also includes smaller structures in a variety of forms. The Humilladero de la VerĂłnica is a small open-air oratory, with a bust of Christ in a niche. The PĂșlpito del EspĂritu Santo is a votive shrine dedicated to the Holy Trinity, on a small square beside the church’s foot façade. Its design clearly recalls an open-air pulpit. The differences between the church, oratory and votive shrine reveal the diversity of the town’s architectural history.

Museums and local language

The Museo del Léxico Serrano presents a graphic depiction of the vocabulary and typical expressions of the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche. It can be visited during town hall opening hours; check the times before your visit. The Museo de Fuenteheridos hosts temporary exhibitions, conferences, discussions and lectures. As some programmes are time-limited, their individual schedules may be relevant to your travel plans.

Festivals with different occasions

The Feria de la Castaña has been held continuously in Fuenteheridos since 1983. It takes place after the chestnut harvest ends and features activities, games and tastings centred on chestnuts. The Fiesta del chopo is one of the town’s oldest celebrations and takes place on the Saturday after Corpus Christi. Participants go to the poplar grove on the banks of the MĂșrtiga, fell a poplar and carry it to a square in front of the parish church. The annual proceedings may vary.

The two festivals therefore have different timing cues: the Feria is linked to the end of the chestnut harvest, while the Fiesta del chopo is tied to the date of Corpus Christi. If you would like to plan your trip around either event, check the dates and arrangements in advance. The Romería de la Reina de los Ángeles also has a religious character: traditionally, residents of Fuenteheridos make a pilgrimage to the Santuario de La Reina de los Ángeles. During the Romería, the Sin Pecado is carried in a cart drawn by oxen. During the procession of the Virgen de la Fuente, the image stops at the Fuente de los Doce Caños, where the water is blessed; the procession arrangements may vary.

Strolling and hiking

The Paseo de los Poetas is designed as an area for strolling and relaxing. Those interested in hiking can also consider the Sendero Fuenteheridos–Galaroza–Castaño del Robledo: it is classified as difficult because of its distance. This difficulty rating may vary depending on conditions. A landscaped walking area and a trail rated as challenging thus offer different ways to spend time outdoors.
