Discover Palos De La Frontera
Accommodation in Palos De La Frontera
Palos de la Frontera is shaped above all by the history of the Pinzón family and the events of 1492. It also features buildings with Gothic and Mudéjar characteristics, as well as diverse natural attractions: a large protected area and a botanical park. This lets you explore the destination according to your interests in local history, architecture, or plant life.
The Pinzón Family and the History of 1492
The Iglesia Parroquial de San Jorge Mártir is a building in the Gothic-Mudéjar style. It has three Mudéjar naves and a Gothic apse; in 1931, the church was declared a National Monument. In May 1492, the Royal Pragmatic Decree was read aloud in the church square. It required Palos to provide two caravels to Christopher Columbus and recruit local sailors. The church square is therefore associated with a specific order issued in the lead-up to the expedition.
The Casa natal, Museo Martín Alonso Pinzón was the birthplace of Martín Alonso, Vicente Yáñez, and Francisco Martín Pinzón. The building was constructed in the mid-15th century and is currently used for the research, preservation, and permanent display of documents, bibliographic materials, and objects related to the history of the Pinzón family and Palos de la Frontera in connection with the discovery of America. The family’s history and the history of the town come together in this collection. Check the current opening arrangements before visiting.
The Puerto Histórico de Palos is another historic landmark: the expedition led by Christopher Columbus and the Pinzón brothers set sail from there on August 3, 1492. A pottery workshop with twelve kilns was discovered at the port. It is considered the most complete and best-preserved pottery workshop in Europe dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. The events of that year can be distinguished chronologically: in May, the decree was read in the church square; on August 3, the expedition set sail from the historic port. Alongside this event, the workshop offers an archaeological perspective on the port area.
Palos de la Frontera is also the main stop on the Ruta de los Lugares Colombinos. This connection to the route places the town’s history within a regional thematic context.
Architecture and Nature
La Fontanilla stands on an ancient Roman well curb and is protected by a small Mudéjar temple. The structure, known as a tetrapylon, was built of brick in the 13th century. It thus combines an older connection to the well with clearly identifiable Mudéjar architecture, adding another architectural example to the features of the parish church.
The Paraje Natural Lagunas de Palos y Las Madres nature reserve covers 693 hectares and lies in the municipalities of Palos de la Frontera and Moguer in the province of Huelva. Official boundary updates may change the stated area. The designated reserve therefore belongs not only to Palos, but also includes the municipality of Moguer.
The Parque Botánico José Celestino Mutis covers 12 hectares. Footpaths cross the park and lead to an outer route and an inner route. The park showcases Spanish and Ibero-American flora. The natural attractions therefore differ in scale and focus: the protected area covers a much larger area, while the botanical park is devoted to showcasing flora and offers two walking routes.
