Puerto de la Laja: Industrial Heritage and Routes
Accommodation in Puerto de la Laja
Discover Puerto de la Laja from two perspectives: its industrial history and the routes along the Guadiana. Puerto de la Laja is the river’s last navigable point. Stage 41 of the Camino Natural del Guadiana reaches the village; the VĂa Verde del Guadiana runs from here to La Isabel. Together, they offer a historic settlement and two routes with different courses and features.
Industrial Heritage and the Settlement
Listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest) in the Lugar de Interés Industrial (Industrial Site of Interest) category are the Muelle-Cargadero and the town centre of Puerto de la Laja, the former mining railway route, and the settlement at Cañada del Sardón in El Granado (Huelva). The listing thus covers several elements of industrial heritage: a loading pier, a town centre, a former railway route and a settlement.
The mineral loading pier was in operation by 1858, the earliest documented evidence of its operation. The settlement of Puerto de la Laja was founded as a result of the construction of the loading pier in the last quarter of the 19th century. These dates mark two distinct milestones: the documented operation of the pier and the later founding of the settlement.
The «cuarteladas» are clearly visible in the townscape. These are small, typical miners’ houses arranged in parallel rows of blocks. The term therefore describes not just individual houses, but a recurring pattern in the settlement layout. Part of the original town plan and original buildings has survived to this day. If you are interested in architecture, the rows of blocks offer a tangible glimpse of the building style of a mining settlement.
Routes along the Guadiana
Stage 41 of the Camino Natural del Guadiana initially follows the left bank of the Guadiana to Puerto de la Laja. There, it turns east towards El Granado, then returns to the Guadiana and ends in SanlĂşcar. The sequence makes the course of the river an important point of reference for this route. After Puerto de la Laja, the stage reaches an equipped rest area with a viewing balcony and impressive views of the river.
On Stage 41 in the Andévalo region, Mediterranean scrubland shapes the landscape, with holm oaks (Quercus ilex) and cork oaks (Quercus suber) predominating. Alongside the riverside route, the vegetation is therefore another of the stage’s defining features.
The VĂa Verde del Guadiana
The VĂa Verde del Guadiana is 16.65 kilometres long and runs from Puerto de la Laja in El Granado to La Isabel in El Almendro. The route is suitable for walking and cycling. Its structures include four bridges and two metal walkways. The trail also passes through a tunnel cut into the rock, about 25 metres long. Its length, endpoints and structures give you practical details to help you include this route in your travel plans.
The two routes can be considered for different reasons: Stage 41 is defined by its course along the Guadiana, its change of direction and its destination, SanlĂşcar; the VĂa Verde is characterised by its length, endpoints and structures.
