Trigueros: Dolmen, Churches and Festivals
Accommodation in Trigueros
There are several different themes to choose from for a stay in Trigueros: a megalithic structure, church architecture from different periods, traditional festivals and a route that can be enjoyed in several ways. This lets you decide in advance whether to focus your trip on cultural heritage, a particular festival or outdoor activities.
Dolmen and Historic Churches
The Dolmen de Soto has a 21.50-metre-long covered gallery that faces east. It consists of 67 orthostats—upright stone slabs—with engravings and paintings. Its length, orientation and decorated stones give the structure a distinct architectural form. If the dolmen is a fixed part of your itinerary, note the visitor requirement: visits are only possible by prior reservation. Self-guided, guided and group visits are available. Arrange your reservation before travelling and check the visitor information.
The Iglesia de San Antonio Abad brings together several layers of architectural history. The building has Gothic-Mudéjar features and was rebuilt after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. Its façade and bell tower are neoclassical in style. The chapels of the Gospel and Epistle contain 15th-century frescoes. The church therefore combines older interior features with a later-style exterior.
The Colegio de Santa Catalina also offers several historical points of interest. It was founded towards the end of the second third of the 16th century. A church is all that remains of the Colegio, with its Venetian Renaissance character particularly evident on the exterior. The Colegio was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in November 2008. Its founding date, the church’s architecture and its later protected status are different aspects of the same cultural heritage.
Festivals on Different Dates
The traditional Capeas take place over a week from the end of August to the beginning of September. They include morning encierros and afternoon capeas. The exact programme may vary from year to year, so check the dates in advance if you want to plan your trip around this event.
The patron saint festivities of San Antonio Abad take place on the last weekend of January, provided the following Monday and Tuesday do not fall in February. Religious activities include a novena, the blessing of animals and the Tercia procession. This calendar condition is important when planning your visit. Another tradition is the “Las Candelas” festival: after the Christmas season ends, the first sheaves are gathered in the countryside to prepare for the celebration.
Crafts and Outdoor Activities
Traditional brickmaking is still practised in Trigueros. The bricks are air-dried, the moulds are worked by hand and traditional kilns are used. This work involves several distinct stages and offers a glimpse of a craft that is still practised, alongside the historic buildings.
The Vía Verde Los Molinos de Agua can be used on foot, by mountain bike, on horseback or in a wheelchair. This gives you a different focus for your trip than the churches and dolmen: you can include activity along the route in your stay and choose how to get around according to your preferences.
