Aldeaquemada brings together a distinctive natural area and a local history that can be traced through its buildings and rock art. The Paraje Natural Cascada de Cimbarra is known for its rugged terrain, a series of waterfalls and diverse vegetation. In the town, the old quarter and historic buildings offer their own points of interest. You can shape your trip around nature, hiking trails or cultural heritage.

Natural Area and Protected Site

The Paraje Natural Cascada de Cimbarra covers 534 hectares within the municipality of Aldeaquemada. As a ZEC and ZEPA, it is part of the Natura 2000 network; the boundaries of both protected-site designations coincide with those of the natural area. Rugged terrain, several waterfalls and diverse vegetation shape the character of the landscape.

Its protection history includes several designations: in 1989, the area was designated a natural area under Law 2/1989, in 2002 as a ZEPA, and in 2015 as a ZEC. This timeline helps put the different protection labels into context without interpreting them as referring to different boundaries.

Three Trails, Different Time Estimates

When planning a hike, it is worth considering the trail type, length and estimated walking time together. The Sendero Cascada La Cimbarra is a 1.2-kilometre circular trail; the estimated walking time is 30 minutes, and the difficulty is rated medium to low. At 1.1 kilometres, the Sendero Arroyo Martín Pérez is slightly shorter, but as a linear trail it is listed as taking around 40 minutes. Its difficulty is also rated medium to low.

The Sendero Arroyo Martín Pérez runs mostly alongside a small mountain stream through riverside vegetation. Along the way, the trail passes the Cascada del Cimbarrillo and Charco del Negrillo. This gives it different landscape features from the two circular trails. At 8.7 kilometres, with an estimated walking time of 2 hours and 45 minutes, the Sendero Cerro Monuera is the longest of the three options described; its difficulty is rated medium. The circular trail goes all the way around the hill and through areas with varied vegetation and landscapes. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Old Quarter, Historic Buildings and Rock Art

Aldeaquemada’s old quarter retains its urban layout and distinctive monumental heritage from the Sierra Morena colonies. One notable example is the grain store, built in 1792: it replaced an older building, served as a regulated grain store and, with its monumental dimensions, occupies an entire city block.

The church’s history can also be dated precisely. It opened on 8 January 1771. Before that, a house served as a temporary oratory, blessed on 8 February 1768. Aldeaquemada is also one of the municipalities in Jaén province that are home to sites included in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Arte Rupestre del Arco Mediterráneo de la Península Ibérica.

The Centro de Interpretación de Arte Rupestre offers an immersive exhibition on prehistory. Features mentioned include an immersive projection room and 360-degree virtual reality glasses. Check the visitor programme and opening arrangements before your trip.

Festivals and Culinary Events

The Fiesta de San Antón takes place on 17 January. It includes a procession, a communal bonfire and traditional foods, including bread rings flavoured with matalaúva. As the annual programme should be confirmed, it is a good idea to check local information if you plan to visit around this date.

The Jornadas Gastronómicas de Aldeaquemada take place every year in May. Here too, you should confirm the specific dates locally before travelling. Alongside the landscapes and cultural heritage described as year-round attractions, the festivals offer another possible focus for planning your stay.
