Hornos appeals to travelers with a range of interests: architectural history, the Cosmolarium, the landscape around the El Tranco reservoir and regional food culture. If you are looking for a hotel in Hornos, these themes can help guide your travel plans. Consider whether historic buildings, astronomy, views or local traditions are particularly important to you during your stay.

Castle, Puerta de la Villa and Parish Church

The castle and the Puerta de la Villa were designated Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest) in 1985. The Christian castle complex dates from between the second half of the 13th century and the early 14th century. The castle includes a cistern from an earlier Muslim complex.

The Puerta de la Villa has an angled entrance, suggesting a probable Almohad origin. The Church of the Assumption of Mary is located in the center of Hornos’s historic-artistic ensemble. Most of its construction took place between 1523 and 1550 in the Gothic style.

Access to the castle is also a practical consideration for your plans: from several parking areas at the entrance to the town, it can be reached on foot via a well-signposted route. The historic buildings offer different perspectives on the history of the town, from the medieval castle complex to the architecture of the parish church.

Astronomy at the Cosmolarium

The Cosmolarium has a digital planetarium dome with a diameter of eight meters. It also features exhibitions about the universe, as well as spaces for workshops and educational games. The program includes planetarium sessions, guided tours and activities for observing the night sky from a terrace.

The Cosmolarium thus combines exhibitions and educational activities with sky observation. If you want to plan a session, a guided tour or an evening activity, check the schedule before your trip.

El Tranco and viewpoints

The El Tranco reservoir forms a tranquil inland waterscape among pine forests and olive groves. From Mirador de la Gloria, you can enjoy views of the natural park and the reservoir’s waters. A walking area in Hornos also includes a viewpoint overlooking the town and El Tranco.

Hornos also has a recreational and walking area with benches and a water fountain. These places and areas offer different perspectives: Mirador de la Gloria looks out over the natural park and the water, while the walking area viewpoint takes in the town and the reservoir.

Festivals and regional cuisine

In mid-August, Hornos de Segura celebrates its patron saint festivals in honor of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and San Roque. The exact dates may vary from year to year. If the festivals are relevant to your trip, check the dates for the year in question in advance.

The cuisine also offers a glimpse into local and regional traditions. In Hornos, ajo de harina is made with potatoes, vegetables and wild mountain mushrooms. Gachamigas is a traditional Sierra dish also associated with Hornos; it consists of flour and potatoes. Cuerva is a traditional local drink made with wine, water, plenty of sugar and pieces of fruit. These dishes and the drink have different regional associations: ajo de harina is specifically prepared in Hornos, while gachamigas and cuerva belong to the wider Sierra area.
