Explore Jaén through its Renaissance architecture, Iberian heritage, museums and trails. Olive oil and regional dishes are also among the experiences on offer. If you’re looking for a hotel in Jaén, it helps to first consider which themes you want your stay to focus on.

Architecture and the City’s History

The Catedral de la Asunción is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture and a masterpiece by Andrés de Vandelvira. Its main chapel houses the Santo Rostro and the Virgen de la Antigua. Castillo de Santa Catalina features a walled complex defended by six towers. A visit offers an opportunity to learn about Jaén’s history from its origins to the present day, including its connection with the surrounding area.

On the slope below Castillo de Santa Catalina, archaeological remains of an Iberian oppidum have been preserved. Here, the city’s history and visible traces of an earlier settlement come together. Those interested in Jaén’s development will find a different perspective here from the one offered by the cathedral’s architecture: the castle provides a historical overview, while the slope below points to the Iberian past.

Iberian History and Museums

The Oppidum de Puente Tablas also offers insights into Iberian history. Its interpretation centre explains life in an Iberian city throughout the different seasons. Beside the Puerta del Sol is a sanctuary dedicated to a female deity. The centre’s seasonal perspective complements the architectural and archaeological evidence by offering an idea of how urban life is viewed over the course of the year.

The Museo Íbero de Jaén is considered unique in the world in its field. The Museo de Jaén has an archaeological section with a significant collection from the Iberian period, as well as a fine arts section. This means you can choose between a museum with a dedicated focus on Iberian history and one with both archaeological and art sections.

Baños Árabes and Olive Oil

The Baños Árabes were built in the 11th century and cover 450 square metres. A visit can be combined with the Museo de Arte Naïf and the Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares. This allows you to explore the site alongside two other museums, each with its own thematic focus.

For an insight into olive groves and olive oil production, Cooperativa Ciudad de Jaén offers guided visits to olive groves and an oil mill, followed by an olive oil tasting. There is also a walk through olive groves accompanied by an olive-growing expert. The cooperative also introduces traditional dishes from Jaén prepared with olive oil. If you plan to take part in one of these activities, check the current booking arrangements; menus may also change.

Routes and Landscapes

The Vía Verde del Aceite is 55 kilometres long in total. It starts at the edge of Jaén’s urban area, next to the Las Fuentezuelas municipal sports complex. This gives you both a named starting point and the route’s total length for planning purposes. Local access conditions may change, so check them before making plans.

The Sendero de la Muralla PR-A126 is a circular route that begins in the urban area of Jaén. The PR-A126 and PR-A127 trails are signposted in Parque Periurbano del Neveral and around Castillo de Santa Catalina. Parque Periurbano del Neveral and the area around the castle consist mainly of a forest of Pinus halepensis and rocky terrain. When planning your route, you can distinguish between the known starting point and circular format of the PR-A126 and the signposted trails in the Neveral and castle areas.

The Via Ferrata de Fuente de la Peña allows you to climb between rock faces. It is equipped with footholds, bridges and safety cables, and offers views of the city of Jaén and the sea of olive trees. If you’re planning a visit, check the technical requirements for this via ferrata.

Planning Your Stay

Visitors can plan their stay and consult the city’s cultural and tourism agenda at the Oficina de Turismo de Jaén. If you want to plan your days around cultural activities, the agenda can be a useful guide; check the Oficina’s current procedures before planning a visit.
