Jimena combines historic buildings with recurring September festivals, a protected natural monument and a guided olive oil experience. When planning a hotel stay, you can decide what matters most to you: architectural history, a particular festival date, or nature and olive oil.

Castle, Church and Religious Heritage

The keep is all that remains of Castillo de Jimena: a square, 20-metre-high tower built by Christians in the late 13th or early 14th century. The castle was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1985. The construction date and heritage designation provide two different points of reference for the castle, giving context both to the tower’s origins and to its later recognition as a protected heritage site. If the tower is closed, visitors can ask at Jimena Town Hall for it to be opened. As access arrangements may change, it is advisable to ask about the possibility before your visit.

Iglesia de Santiago el Mayor also reveals several phases of construction. It was built in the late 15th and early 16th centuries over a mosque dating from the Islamic period. Its three-nave plan and chancel are Gothic and belong to the first construction phase in the 15th century. The interior columns and the portal on Callejón de la Audiencia, by contrast, date from the 16th century and are designed in the Renaissance style. The building thus brings together the Gothic layout of the early phase and Renaissance elements added later.

Santuario de la Cánava was built in 1910 in honour of the Virgen de los Remedios, in the wooded Paraje de Cánava. Cueva de la Graja is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural and has been recognised as a National Historic Monument since 1924. These different sites may appeal to travellers interested in religious buildings, historical context or officially recognised cultural heritage.

September Dates and Traditions

Jimena’s main festival in honour of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios takes place from 7 to 10 September. The image of the patron saint is brought from her Ermita to Jimena; on 10 September, a pilgrimage returns it to its sanctuary at Cánava. The Pasacalles procession featuring giants and big-head figures also begins at Plaza de la Constitución on 7 September. It takes place on this date every year. The accompanying activities may vary. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the current programme for your travel dates.

Los Tíos de Ricia in Jimena is listed as a festive ritual in the Atlas of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Jaén.

Natural Monument and Route to Cueva de la Graja

Pinar de Cánava is located in the municipality of Jimena, in the province of Jaén. The Junta de Andalucía protected it as a Natural Monument on 22 November 2001. The site includes 121 specimens of the species Pinus halepensis. They are more than two centuries old on average, and some trees are over 250 years old. Its protected status, tree species and age make this natural monument a distinct attraction alongside the historic buildings.

The route to Cueva de la Graja is listed as a 0.6-kilometre linear trail, with an estimated walking time of about 30 minutes. These figures offer a rough guide for planning, not an exact walking time. As route information may change, it is best to check it again before setting out.

Olive Oil as a Visitor Experience

The “AOVE sabor a sierra” experience at Aceites Oro de Cánava in Jimena includes a guided tour of the facilities. The entire production process is explained, from the delivery of the olives to the bottling of the oil. The experience concludes with a sensory tasting, where you can discover the characteristics and nuances of oils from the Sierra surroundings. If you are planning this tour, ask about booking requirements in advance.
