There are several ways to plan a trip to La Matea: a named hiking route through holm oak forest, recreational areas with a river and spring, and regional specialties that you can sample. If you’re looking for a hotel in La Matea, you can first decide whether you’d like to focus your stay on hiking, natural attractions or local products. The destinations and experiences below have different focuses and can help you plan your trip accordingly.

Hiking and natural attractions

The “La Matea – Castellón de La Nogueras – Fuente del Berral” hiking route starts in La Matea. On the La Matea hill, it passes through a holm oak forest. The Fuente del Berral spring rises in the El Berral recreational area. You can therefore use the forest section of the route and the spring as two different points of reference for your plans. Conditions on the route may change; check them before setting out.

You can reach the El Muso recreational area via the J-9005; after passing La Matea, it is on the left. The RĂo Muso runs through the area. El Muso therefore offers a different natural setting from El Berral: here, the focus is on the river, while El Berral is known for its spring. Access conditions may change; check them before your visit.

Regional specialties and tastings

La Despensa del Berral is a shop and gourmet food tasting venue in La Matea. Its selection includes ham and loin, oils, wines, cheeses, pâtés, various cured meats, liqueurs, honey and jams. The range therefore includes savory specialties as well as sweets and drinks. The experience also includes a visit to the curing and drying facility for ham and loin. Visitors can learn about the traditional curing process. This lets you discover the venue both through its products and through how they are made. If you plan to visit, check the opening and booking arrangements before your trip.

Agriculture and historical events

A provincial report from November 2024 documents a transhumance from La Matea, in the municipality of Santiago-Pontones, to El Porrosillo in Arquillos. It is connected with the extensive livestock farming that is important to the Santiago-Pontones area and the Sierra de Segura. The transhumance thus illustrates the agricultural links between several places in the region.

The “Grandes Encierros Tradicionales” are historical events that took place in La Matea on June 29 and 30. According to the historical program, activities began at 1:00 p.m. on the specified days, followed by the release of fighting bulls at 6:00 p.m. If you’d like to travel in connection with an event, check in advance whether a program has been announced for your travel dates.

A natural attraction in the wider area

Further afield in the region, the route to Pino Galapán continues through La Matea to Don Domingo; there, a signposted forest path leads to the attraction. Pino Galapán is over 400 years old, 39 metres tall and considered one of the giants of Spain’s forests. This attraction is centered on a single tree, while the recreational areas and hiking route offer other ways to enjoy nature. Road and trail conditions may change seasonally; check them before driving.
