Santiago de la Espada offers several different ways to shape a trip: local culture, cuisine, traditions and natural attractions. When planning, you can focus on visiting historic buildings, exploring the surrounding area or creating your own road itinerary.

Culture and Architectural History

Lugar de Encuentro LEO is a multidisciplinary public cultural and leisure centre in Santiago de la Espada that is open to visitors. The centre includes exhibition spaces, a 300-seat auditorium, a tourist information office and workshops. A large square overlooking the Sierra de Segura completes the complex. Its range of facilities gives the centre a cultural focus that goes beyond exhibitions: it also offers an event space, information and workshops.

The Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol was built in the 16th century and features Gothic and Levantine stylistic elements. Its construction period and stylistic features give the church a specific place in the town’s history. If you are interested in historic architecture, you can view it alongside the buildings and architectural features around the Plaza de la Constitución.

A wooden balustrade dating from the 16th century, belonging to a former Renaissance inn, is located on the Plaza. The Posada de la Ramona, a representation of local vernacular architecture, also stands on the Plaza de la Constitución. These two examples have different architectural associations: one is the balustrade of a former inn, while the other is a building that represents vernacular architecture. The historic centres of the main towns in Santiago-Pontones also reflect an organically developed medieval urban structure.

Local Cuisine

A regional culinary speciality is traditional ajoatao. The dish is made with potatoes and garlic grown in the Vega de Santiago de la Espada. If you would like to try it during your stay, availability depends on the individual establishment. The dish therefore offers a direct connection to local agriculture, although it cannot be assumed to be available everywhere.

Natural Attractions Nearby

The Nacimiento de la Toba is located near Santiago de la Espada, by the hamlet of La Toba. Water emerges from a cave, then flows through the hamlet and on to a waterfall. The spring, cave outlet and waterfall are the individual stages of this watercourse.

Another natural attraction is the Pino Galapán, a black pine more than four centuries old. The tree is about 16 kilometres from Santiago de la Espada. The Mirador de Zumeta, also known as Salto de la Novia, is nearby on the road leading north from the town. From there, the view stretches across the Poyos de Mesa plateau and the Sierra del Huebras. Elevations in this area reach up to 1,600 metres; species found here include griffon vultures, golden eagles and peregrine falcons.

Traditions and Road Itinerary

During the Romería de Santa Quiteria, the procession travels from the Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol to La Carreña. Participants bring horses, wear Andalusian or Serrano traditional dress and attend a mass in honour of the saint. Afterwards, they celebrate the feast day by the river. If you would like to plan your trip around the Romería, check the dates for the festivities, as they may vary depending on the programme.

Another local tradition involves animals being brought from the banks of the Río Zumeta, about four kilometres from the town, along the main streets to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. The destinations of the two processions differ: the procession goes to La Carreña, while the route with the animals ends at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Another option to consider when planning is the visitor route from Santiago de la Espada to Juntas de Miller. It covers 22 kilometres one way along a mountain road and follows the JF-7038. Its destination, one-way distance and road route give this itinerary a different focus from visits to the town and its natural attractions.
