Ventas del Carrizal lies on the N-432 national road between Alcalá la Real and Alcaudete, at the foot of the Sierra de San Pedro. Depending on the reason for your trip, you can include a pilgrimage route, religious devotion, historic sites or a festival in your plans.

The Camino Mozárabe in the townscape

The Camino Mozárabe de Santiago passes through Ventas del Carrizal on the Alcalá la Real–Alcaudete stage, entering the town via a crossing with traffic lights. The Centro de Servicios Sociales in Ventas is an information point for pilgrims. Within the town, the route follows Calle La Fuente downhill to the Río San Juan. The crossing with traffic lights marks the entrance to the town, while Calle La Fuente describes the stretch leading towards the river.

Religious sites and feast days

The Tumba del Santo Manuel is located in the cemetery of Ventas del Carrizal. It is a major attraction in the comarca and one of the key stops on the Ruta de los Milagros y Santones de la Sierra Sur. It is particularly busy on the anniversary of Manuel López Cano’s death, as well as on All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. If your trip coincides with one of these occasions, check the dates for your travel year.

The Fiesta del Emigrante lasts about three or four days and includes activities for all age groups. The Fiesta de San Antonio is celebrated on June 13 and 14. The two festivals offer different kinds of timing guidance: for the Emigrante festival, the focus is on the approximate multi-day period; for San Antonio, the festival dates are June 13 and 14. If you are planning a trip around a festival, it is a good idea to check the dates in advance for your travel year.

Archaeological history outside the town limits

Cabeza Baja de Encina Hermosa lies outside the town limits of Ventas del Carrizal. The site was first an Iberian oppidum and later a Roman vicus dating from the 1st and 2nd centuries. If you are interested in archaeological history, the sequence of these two periods can provide a focus for your trip planning. From Ventas del Carrizal, you can reach Cabeza Baja via the road to Cortijo del Baño.

Other routes and regional produce

The Ruta del Aceite also leads to Ventas del Carrizal: its second stage ends with a final descent to the town. On the Castillo de Locubín–Alcaudete stage, there are usually mobile stalls in Ventas selling typical vegetables and other regional horticultural produce.
