Vilches: Culture, Routes and Reservoirs
Accommodation in Vilches
When looking for a hotel in Vilches, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip. The options range from the castle and San Miguel Church to the Giribaile archaeological site, guided routes, a greenway and reservoirs. This lets you balance cultural history, outdoor activities and nature in your plans.
Castle, Church and Archaeological Remains
At Castillo de Vilches, sections of a rubble-stone wall, round towers and a gate tower have survived. The hill also shows evidence of continuous settlement from prehistoric times to the present day. The surviving structures and evidence of long-term settlement offer different ways to explore the history of the place.
The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel was built between the last third of the 16th century and the second half of the 18th century. Its distinctive features include an unusually rectangular tower and a single-nave interior with a barrel vault. The church also preserves some “trophies” believed to have originally come from the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa.
The Giribaile archaeological site covers 18 hectares and lies at the confluence of the Guadalimar and Guadalén rivers. The structures open to visitors include a prehistoric sanctuary, an Iberian settlement, a Paleo-Christian or Visigothic monastery or hermitage, and an Almohad castle. The different historical interpretations make Giribaile a distinct point of interest alongside the buildings in the town.
Routes for Different Interests
The Ruta de las Fuentes y Cuevas “El Mortero” is a 5.30-kilometre circular route that takes about an hour to walk. You can follow it year-round on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The route passes springs, caves and an aqueduct that carried spring water to Vilches.
“Los miradores de Vilches” is a guided cultural-tourism route centred on the viewpoints in the upper part of the town. The VĂa Verde “MiraelrĂo,” by contrast, is a four-kilometre round trip. It is suitable for walking and cycling tourism, and is particularly appealing to people with reduced mobility. This gives you the choice of a route with a stated walking time, a guided tour, or a route for walking or cycling tourism.
Nature, Water and Recreation
The La Zarzuela recreation area lies 2.5 kilometres north of Vilches, covers more than 20 hectares of municipal land and has a spring. Facilities include walking trails, picnic and barbecue areas, toilets, a rest area and a first-aid station. If any of these facilities are important to your plans, check their current condition before visiting.
La Fernandina, Guadalén and Giribaile reservoirs are options for individual fishing. Species found there include carp, pike and black bass. Canoeing is also recommended at Giribaile Reservoir. The reservoirs thus offer an option for anglers as well as another activity on the water.
Christmas Traditions and Local Experiences
At Christmas, the Campanilleros of Vilches take to the streets, singing traditional songs with inherited lyrics and traditional instruments. The Fiestas Medievales “Vilches Guardián de los Trofeos” are held annually. The programme includes craft stalls, guided tours, theatre, parades, medieval tapas and other activities. Check the dates of the festivities before your trip.
