A stay in Málaga can have many different focuses: protected landscapes, striking natural monuments and cultural sites in the city. For your travel planning, it is worth considering both. The province offers a wide range of nature destinations, while the city of Málaga is home to its own museums and historic buildings.

Natural Monuments and Protected Landscapes

There are more than 15 protected natural areas in the province of Málaga. These include El Torcal de Antequera, one of the natural monuments within the Antequera Dolmens Site UNESCO World Heritage Site. El Torcal is also protected as a nature reserve and Special Protection Area, and is part of the Natura 2000 network. The Dolmen of Viera is also part of the Antequera Dolmens Site in the province of Málaga. Those interested in nature and cultural heritage will find two distinct aspects of a UNESCO World Heritage Site here: the natural monument of El Torcal and the dolmen’s archaeological heritage.

In the west of the province, the natural area of Sierra de las Nieves lies within the natural landscape of Serranía de Ronda. It is home to the largest remaining stand of Spanish fir forest on the Iberian Peninsula. North of the city of Málaga is Montes de Málaga Natural Park: gentle mountain ranges running parallel to the coast and small valleys shape the landscape, where Aleppo pine is the predominant vegetation. The two areas represent different landscapes within the province.

Routes and Visit Planning

The Caminito del Rey is located in the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes natural area in the center of the province of Málaga, less than 60 kilometers from the capital. Its location provides a clear point of reference within the province and links a visit to the surrounding natural area. As access information may change, it is advisable to check it before your visit. Montes de Málaga Natural Park is open to visitors free of charge; visits are coordinated through the Lagar de Torrijos visitor center.

The Gran Senda de Málaga GR-249 offers another perspective on the province. The route extends for more than 650 kilometers and comprises 35 stages. Its length and number of stages convey its vast scale: it cannot be equated with a single short trail. If you would like to include routes in your trip, you can take this scale into account when planning.

Culture and History in the City of Málaga

The Museo Picasso Málaga came about in response to Pablo Picasso’s wish for his works to be present in the city where he was born. The museum is housed in the Palacio de Buenavista, a 16th-century building that combines Renaissance and Mudéjar elements. The palace also displays Phoenician and Roman remains, as well as rooms from the former Renaissance palace, as evidence of Málaga’s history. In this way, art and different historical layers come together in one building.

The Alcazaba is the palace and fortress of Málaga’s Muslim rulers and was built mostly in the 11th century. The Roman Theatre represents a different era: it was built in the 1st century AD, during the time of Augustus. If you are interested in sacred art and local traditions, the Museo del Santo Sepulcro offers a distinct focus. The museum is dedicated to sacred art, and particularly to Málaga’s Semana Santa. Together, these subjects show how the city’s history can be explored through its buildings, archaeology and religious traditions.

Coast and Culinary Traditions

The province of Málaga borders the Mediterranean Sea along 160 kilometers of coastline and has numerous beaches and sports harbors. Regional cuisine also offers specific highlights: specialties include fried assortments of small Mediterranean fish, such as anchovies, red mullet and horse mackerel, as well as typical dishes like gazpacho. The wines have the Málaga and Sierras de Málaga designations of origin. Alongside landscapes and culture, these examples offer a culinary focus for your trip planning.

Choosing the Right Base for Your Trip

If the city’s museums and historic buildings are your main focus, that calls for a different approach than planning around natural areas and routes in the province. Your itinerary will therefore determine your choice of base: would you mainly like to explore the city, or the natural areas and routes in the province?
