Gines: Church Art, Ceramic Route and Rocío Tradition
Accommodation in Gines
Church art, ceramics and the Rocío tradition give a trip to Gines several distinct cultural highlights. These include a late Mudéjar church with artworks from different centuries, a route featuring painted ceramic panels, and the “Una Pará en Gines” tourism fair.
Church and artworks in Gines
The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Belén is a late Mudéjar church dating from the 16th century. It was built over an older structure and remodeled in the Renaissance style in the 17th century. Its construction history therefore comprises several distinct periods, which can be considered as a separate highlight alongside the artworks inside.
The church’s main altarpiece is designed in the Rococo style. At its center is an anonymous image of Nuestra Señora de Belén, dating from the late 16th or early 17th century. Another work is “La Ascensión de Cristo”: the painting by Domingo Martínez, a painter from Seville, is dated 1725 and is perhaps one of the most outstanding paintings there. Together, the altarpiece and painting offer different points of reference for placing the church’s art history in context.
The Ermita de Santa Rosalía
Another historic religious building is the Ermita de Santa Rosalía, built in 1723 and one of the town’s most emblematic buildings, steeped in history. It has a basilica-style floor plan. Inside is a Baroque main altarpiece with Santa Rosalía as its central figure. The chapel’s floor plan and the design of its altarpiece can therefore be appreciated as distinct architectural and artistic features.
Ruta de las Sevillanas de Gines
The Ruta de las Sevillanas de Gines combines local Sevillanas with ceramic art: 17 Sevillanas from Gines are depicted on an equal number of hand-painted, artisan-made ceramic panels. The panels were made by ceramic artist María Ángeles Garrido Peña. The route can be seen along Conde de Ofalia, Alcalde José Antonio Cabrera and Blas Infante streets. The songs, handcrafted designs and named streets each provide a different point of reference for the route.
Una Pará en Gines
“Una Pará en Gines” is an important tourism fair for the town. It focuses on nature and Gines’s deep-rooted Rocío tradition. The event lasts four days and includes numerous activities for all audiences. The fair therefore offers a different focus from the churches and ceramic route. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the dates and specific program in advance.
