La Puebla de Cazalla offers a range of starting points for planning a trip: museums in historic buildings, an annual music event, Semana Santa processions, local dishes and the landscape of El Pinalejo. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether you would like to focus your stay on culture, cuisine or outdoor activities.

Museums and history

The Museo Arqueológico y Etnográfico de La Puebla de Cazalla is located in Hacienda la Fuenlonguilla, a former olive mill that operated from the 19th to the 20th century. The museum brings together different perspectives on the town: it showcases local arts and customs, as well as the history of La Puebla de Cazalla from the Neolithic period to the Muslim era. An exhibition of 19 photographs is also devoted to the traditional production of solid bricks and roof tiles. Everyday culture, long periods of history and a specific manufacturing process are presented side by side.

The Museo del Aceite is also located in Hacienda La Fuenlonguilla. The mill there dates back to 1858; the museum traces the process of olive oil production from harvest to extraction. Guided visits are available only by prior appointment. The areas open to visitors also include the former living quarters of the owners. Check the visiting arrangements for these rooms in advance.

At the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo José María Moreno Galván, you will encounter a different building history: it is housed in a 16th-century Pósito, whose original arcade has been preserved. The permanent collection includes works by national and international avant-garde and post-avant-garde artists, with a particularly large number of artists from Andalusia. There are also temporary exhibitions. This distinction is useful for planning: the collection’s focus is permanent, while the exhibitions on offer change.

The Museo Antonio Fuentes Zurita is housed in a chalet and is divided into a vestibule and four rooms. On display are biographical information, contemporary portraits and bullfighting posters covering Antonio Fuentes’ career from 1892 to 1934. The history of the Castillo de Luna goes back even further: in the 5th century BC, it began as a defensive structure of the Iberian Turdetani; around 200 years later, under the Carthaginians, it became a watchtower.

Festivals and local cuisine

The Reunión de Cante Jondo was established at the initiative of José Menese and Francisco Moreno Galván; the first event took place in September 1967. It is held annually and currently takes place at Hacienda Ntra. Sra. del Carmen (La Fuenlonguilla). Check the dates for the relevant edition when planning your trip.

Semana Santa includes penitential processions by four Hermandades. They take place on Palm Sunday, Tuesday of Holy Week, Maundy Thursday, during the early hours of Good Friday, and on Good Friday. As the schedules vary from year to year, the programme for the relevant year is essential if you are planning a visit.

Typical local dishes and sweets include aceitunas prietas, jarria, patatas con bacalao and majaillo. Also among them are asparagus and tagarnina stews, as well as entornaos. These regional names give you specific starting points as you explore the local cuisine; the dishes add a culinary focus to the cultural side of your trip planning.

Landscape and hiking routes

El Pinalejo lies in the southeastern part of the municipality and covers 9,378 hectares. Its Mediterranean vegetation is dominated by pine trees, alongside holm oaks and Mediterranean scrubland. Hiking, mountain biking and camping are possible in the area; check locally on the conditions for your planned activities.

A total of eleven hiking routes are planned for La Puebla de Cazalla, of which three are currently signposted. The number of planned paths and the currently signposted routes describe two different stages of planning. When choosing your route, take into account which paths are signposted, and check local information before setting out. Alongside the museums, festivals and culinary traditions, the landscape offers its own reason to shape your trip around the topics that interest you most.
