La Rinconada offers a variety of reasons to get to know the area: its river park and paths sit alongside archaeological history, architecture and festivals. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus primarily on green spaces and outdoor activities, cultural themes or an event in the festival calendar.

Green Spaces and Paths

Parque El Majuelo is a river park that has been expanded to 210,000 square metres. Water activities are also part of its appeal: the park, together with the Guadalquivir, is used as a route for rowing and canoeing. Parque Central de La Unión offers a different setting. This 2.8-hectare green space has walking and cycling paths, places to relax and a body of water. If these facilities are important to your plans, check their condition before your visit.

Eje del Agua is a walking and cycling route more than 20 kilometres long, between Parque El Majuelo and Parque de Las Graveras. La Rinconada’s cycling network, meanwhile, is about 40 kilometres long. To get your bearings, it is worth distinguishing between the two figures: Eje del Agua refers to a route with named endpoints, while around 40 kilometres describes the cycling network. This distinction helps you work out whether you are interested in a single connection or the town’s cycling options as a whole.

Archaeology and Architectural History

Cerro Macareno is an artificial settlement mound that preserves remains of a Tartessian and Turdetanian settlement dating from the 1st millennium BC. Within the municipality of La Rinconada, it is protected as an archaeological site and classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural, BIC). The Museo Arqueológico y Paleontológico Francisco Sousa displays pottery from Cerro Macareno dating from the 8th to the 1st century BC. The pieces include Tartessian, Phoenician, Greek, Iberian and Roman examples. The protected site and the collection thus offer different ways to explore the same long history of settlement.

The area’s architectural history also offers clear points of reference: Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves is a 15th-century Mudéjar church. The town hall is considered an example of Andalusian regionalist architecture. These two descriptions represent different periods and architectural styles, and can provide ideas for a cultural-history walk without requiring a particular route.

Festivals and Art in Public Spaces

Feria del Abrazo is part of La Rinconada’s recurring seasonal festival calendar. The annual Romería de San Isidro takes place on the first weekend in October and travels from the parish church of San José to El Toril. There, participants share a meal and spend the afternoon before returning to San José. If you want to experience either event, check the exact dates before travelling.

Fiesta de la Patata is associated with the start of the potato harvest; the festival includes a tasting of a potato and meat stew. Another cultural event is a seminar held around November each year by the University of Seville and UNED on current developments in palaeontology and archaeology. More than 200 people attend. The two occasions have different focuses: one celebrates the potato harvest and a dish, while the other brings people together for professional discussion of archaeology and palaeontology.

You can explore the Museo Urbano al Aire Libre on a walk along its catalogued installations. These include paintings and sculptures on façades, in neglected areas, on transformers and at roundabouts; the works are spread across different neighbourhoods. Individual murals may change. This urban art adds another perspective on public spaces to the historical themes.
