Pruna combines hiking trails in the Sierra del Tablón with historic buildings and local traditions. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can plan your trip around the things that interest you most: a climb to El Terril, the history of Castillo del Hierro, or the town’s religious and culinary traditions.

Hiking trails and landscapes around Pruna

A hiking trail from Pruna crosses the Sierra del TablĂłn to El Terril. At 1,129 metres, it is the highest point in the province of Seville. Strawberry trees, holm oaks, rockroses and broom shape the landscape on the north side of the sierra. El Molinillo is a waterfall about 30 metres high, around 1.5 kilometres from Pruna. It forms where the waters of two streams flow over a rock ledge. Above it stands a grain mill dating from the 16th century. Fuente del Duque is another prominent water source: it has four stone-hewn basins and is fed by a spring flowing from the Sierra del TablĂłn.

Routes for different interests

The Camino de Santiago de la Frontera begins in Pruna; the section through the province of Seville runs a little over eleven kilometres to Algámitas. The stage from Pruna is listed as 11.5 kilometres and takes about two and a half hours. It is rated moderate. The Ruta Subida al Terril is also rated moderate: its listed distance is 6.90 kilometres, with a duration of 2.30 hours. The Camino focuses on the stage to Algámitas, while the other route leads to El Terril. The distance and time estimates can help you compare the two routes when planning. Trail and surface conditions may vary; check them before setting out.

The climb to Castillo del Hierro is also described as a route: it starts at Fuente del Pilarillo and climbs for about 800 metres, gaining almost 200 metres in elevation. Trail conditions and access rules may change, so check the conditions before your visit.

Castle, church and local history

Castillo del Hierro was built in the 13th century as a defensive fortification on the Castilian–Nasrid border. It is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural and is considered the only monument of Nasrid origin in the province of Seville. Pruna is also home to Iglesia San Antonio Abad, a Baroque church originally dating from the 16th century. Its features include numerous altarpieces, paintings and images, an altar and a dome. The Cristo de la Vera Cruz, from the school of Pedro Roldán, is particularly notable.

Fuente de las Lavanderas offers another glimpse into the town’s history. A monument there commemorates the washerwomen. Beside it is the original Pilar, first used for agriculture and later by women as a washing place. Ermita del Navazo, also known as Ermita de La Pura y Limpia, lies four kilometres from Pruna in a landscape of unspoilt character near the Sierra del Tablón. Its elevated position provides a viewpoint over the surrounding sierras and makes it a place for observing the night sky. Weather and visibility affect what you can see.

RomerĂa and religious traditions

The pilgrimage in Pruna takes place every year. Between 1940 and 1946, the RomerĂa was revived at Cerro del Navazo, about four kilometres from the town centre. During the RomerĂa de la Pura y Limpia, the procession travels to the ermita. The Virgin rides in a covered carriage pulled by two oxen. Dates and arrangements may vary, so it is advisable to check the details before your visit. On Good Friday, Pruna also celebrates the SermĂłn del Descendimiento de Cristo. This rite has medieval roots and is still observed there.

Olive oil from Pruna

A visit to Cooperativa Pruna San AntĂłn includes a stop at centuries-old olive groves, a visit to the olive mill, and an olive oil tasting. Confirm the visit again before making plans. The extra virgin olive oil with protected designation of origin is produced by simple cold pressing using the LechĂn, Picual, Hojiblanca, Manzanilla and Verdial varieties.
