Adahuesca lies between the valleys of the Vero and Alcanadre rivers and is one of the municipalities in the Río Vero Cultural Park. Its compact town center, historic church interiors, a center devoted to legends and traditions, and landscape routes offer a variety of highlights. The town can be explored through its architectural history and stories, as well as through its Mediterranean landscape and geological features.

Townscape and sacred architecture

Traditional architecture shapes the compact town center. Round-arched doorways recur on the façades, giving the streetscape a distinctive character. The parish church of San Pedro was built in the 18th century in the Classical Baroque style. The chapel of Saints Nunilo and Alodia is considered one of the most elaborate Baroque interiors in the churches of the comarca.

The Esconjuradero of Adahuesca is integrated into a church above the sacristy. Rituals were performed there to ward off hailstorms. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Treviño is a surviving part of a former monastery dating from the 13th century and is classified as a property of special cultural interest. The temple, which has Romanesque origins, includes a cloister; its former appearance can still be glimpsed from the outside.

Legends and history

The Center for Legends and Traditions is located on the site of the former parish church and a castle built around 1055. Remains of the castle are still visible. The exhibition explores old stories and legends, fantastic beings, beliefs, and rites. Information panels, photographs, display cases, and audiovisual media present these themes in different ways. The center offers guided tours of its exhibition.

The Leyendas al paso route offers another way to find your bearings, passing eleven information panels along the trails. The exhibition and the route therefore take different forms: several media come together in one center, while the panels accompany visitors along the route.

Views and landscape routes

The Mirador de San Pedro offers a panorama of the Sierra de Sevil, which lies within the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park. The view thus connects a specific lookout point with the landscape of a natural park.

The Paisaje mediterráneo route near Adahuesca combines ochre-colored agricultural stretches with paths through evergreen oak groves and a varied array of flowering plants. Pie de Sierra leads from the foothills near Adahuesca toward Alquézar; its route passes through holm oak forests, grain fields, and Mediterranean crops such as olive and almond groves. The routes have different highlights: one features ochre-colored stretches, oak groves, and flowering plants, while the other heads toward Alquézar and passes through forest, grain fields, and cultivated land.

Loma de los “dineretes” de Sevil has its own geological features: it contains numerous fossils of the genus Nummulites from the Eocene. At that time, the area was covered by the sea. The fossils thus point to a history of the landscape that predates the agricultural areas of today by a long time.

Festivities and cheese tasting

The main festivities in honor of Saints Nunilo and Alodia take place annually from August 24 to 28. If you would like to plan your trip around this time, note the fixed dates; details of the festivities program may vary.

Quesos de Radiquero offers tastings of its four main types of cheese during visits, both unguided and guided. Visit options depend on the cheese dairy’s operations. If you are planning a tasting, check which visit arrangements are available at the time.
