Castejón Del Puente can be explored through two distinct points of interest: buildings and traces of earlier uses, as well as trails through the Cinca landscape. If you are weighing up a trip that combines cultural history with time outdoors, the local attractions offer specific points to consider. The churches and chapel differ in their architecture and location; there is also a noria, historic defensive structures and the remains of a Roman bridge. The range thus extends from architectural details to a route through changing landscapes.

Churches and architectural heritage

On the edge of Castejón Del Puente stands the Iglesia de la Asunción, also known as the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. The Gothic church was built directly on exposed rock on a hill, overlooking the town and the Cinca Valley. Its location and architectural form offer two different perspectives on the same building. The Ermita de la Bella adds its own architectural note: it is a rectangular Romanesque chapel with a pointed-arch vault; a round-arched portal remains at the west end. A pointed arch rises to a peak, while a round arch closes in a semicircle. At the chapel, the two forms appear on different architectural elements: the vault and the portal.

The Noria de la Huerta Vieja and a similar noria in Almudévar are the only surviving examples in Alto Aragón. At the Noria de la Huerta Vieja, the masonry structure that once supported its water-lifting wheel remains; behind the noria, you can also see the remains of the Cequiero's hut. The Castillo de Castejón Del Puente is also among the castles classified as Bienes de Interés Cultural. At Castejón Del Puente, the visible remains of a Roman bridge comprise twelve piers and two abutments. These examples differ both in their architectural form and in which parts have survived to the present day.

Landscape and birdwatching

The 4.8 km Sotos del Río Cinca route passes through holm oak forest, low scrubland and farmland before reaching a riverside forest with meanders and gravel beaches. Its length and changing landscapes provide a practical guide for planning a route. The river landscape, with its meanders and gravel beaches, is a different section from the woodland, scrubland and farmland crossed earlier.

Birdwatching opportunities are described along the route, including white storks, eagle owls, ospreys and Egyptian vultures. Sightings of eagle owls and ospreys are seasonal. If these species are important to your travel plans, check beforehand which season is suitable. This also lets you consider the route from the perspective of its birdlife without assuming that individual species can be observed in every season.

Defensive structures and planning your visit

A circular trail runs around the outside of the hill at the defensive position on Tozal de las Aguaderas. The site includes numerous machine-gun nests, fortifications and underground shelters that protected the troops. A signposted trail also leads to the restored trenches from the Spanish Civil War. Visits to the trenches are arranged by appointment over the phone. Call 974 404 466 or 974 404 558 to arrange a time and confirm the details before you travel.

Trails and local festival

Several signposted trails start in Castejón Del Puente, including one to the Romanesque Santuario de la Bella. Another signposted trail leads to the trenches. As local trail conditions can change, check them before setting out. The main local festival takes place on 8 September in honour of La Virgen de la Bella. If the festival date is important to your trip, check the event schedule before travelling. The buildings, landscape route and fixed festival date thus offer different points of reference when deciding what you would like your stay to focus on.
