Castejón de Monegros offers practical starting points for planning your trip: historic buildings, trails leading to named destinations, and local traditions. If you are looking for a hotel in Castejón, you can choose where to stay based on whether you would like to focus mainly on architecture, a hike, or a festival date.

Buildings and history in Castejón

The underground Acueducto La Madre is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. The Castillo de Castejón de Monegros also combines a long history with distinctive architectural features: it was built in the 13th century, and its earliest mention dates to 1211. The castle has clear Gothic forms. Although it was converted into a hermitage, its façade and towers have been preserved almost unchanged. This makes it possible to distinguish between the period of construction and the earliest mention, while the surviving structural elements draw attention to the architecture.

Another historical landmark is the Iglesia de Santa María de la Lumbre. Its portico has Gothic arches; in the 14th century, the Jurado and the Concejo de Castellón met there for consultations. The Ermita de Santa Ana was built at the beginning of the 16th century. Brick façades recur throughout the streets of Castejón. There are also numerous examples of vernacular architecture and stately homes, including the houses of Buil, el Tendero, and Ferrer. As you walk through the town, you will encounter different forms of architectural heritage: from a religious building and a portico to façades and houses.

Trails to the castle, the spring, and Jubierre

The Camino Natural de Castejón de Monegros begins at the Fuente de Arriba. This is the only point along the trail where visitors can get water. Include this water point in your plans. From the Fuente de Arriba, a path reserved exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists runs between fields to the spring and the underground Acueducto La Madre. A circular route on the Camino Natural leads to the Castillo de Castejón de Monegros. Another described route crosses the HU-831 road and then heads south along a shaded path to the Ermita de Santa Ana. Details about the starting point, trail surface, and destinations give you various practical points of reference for finding your way, without specifying a walking time.

Nearby Jubierre has routes that can be travelled by mountain bike, car, or on horseback. They are suitable for hiking according to the signposted or mapped itineraries. Access conditions may vary seasonally. Jubierre is also classified as a Lugar de Interés Geológico because of its network of ravines and distinctive landforms, created by intense erosion. If you are interested in the landscape, these landforms connect your route planning with the area’s distinctive geological history.

Festivals and local traditions

The festival calendar lists celebrations in honour of San Fabián and San Sebastián on January 20, and feast days for Santiago and Santa Ana on July 25 and 26. Check these dates again before your trip. During the Santa Ana celebration, the Saint is carried on shoulders to the Ermita de Santa Ana; the procession is accompanied by a traditional dance. The Dance de Pastorada tradition is also associated with Castejón de Monegros and is performed exclusively by women. In Jubierre, an annual pilgrimage to the Ermita de San Miguel takes place on May 8. These dates throughout the year offer different opportunities to include local customs in your travel plans.

One historical detail adds to this picture: in 1593, Castejón de Monegros was granted permission to hold fairs. Along with its buildings and traditional festivals, this offers another perspective on the town’s history without making assumptions about present-day dates or proceedings.
