Eriste: Mountain Scenery, Trails and History
Accommodation in Eriste
The Linsoles Reservoir lies at the foot of Eriste; named trails also lead through the valley, to a waterfall and to other destinations. For planning your trip, you can choose from different options: walking paths by the water, routes with specified itineraries, and cultural themes associated with Eriste. Eriste also combines mountain architecture with a history that stretches from its Romanesque origins to its medieval heyday.
Reservoir, Waterfall and Trails
There are recommended walking paths around the Linsoles Reservoir. The area is closed to motor vehicles and has tables and benches. This makes it possible to combine an outing to the reservoir with a walk and a break at the seating provided. La Espigantosa Waterfall has a drop of 300 metres. A 4.5-kilometre trail leads there; walking it takes about an hour and a half.
Hiking Trails and Their Destinations
The Camino de la Montaña, also called the Ruta Real, climbs through the Eriste valley and passes the Palanca de Tramarrius and Espigantosa Waterfall. The PR-HU 33 runs from Eriste via Anciles to Cerler and back to Eriste. The PR-HU 36 leads from Eriste via the Tramarríus Bridge and the bridge and waterfall of La Espigantosa to the Refugio de Ángel Orús, also known as El Forcau, and back again.
The PR-HU 34 starts in Eriste and leads to Casa Conques. Casa Conques is considered a former fief dating from the 14th century, which ruled over vast mountain areas in Ribagorza. The PR-HU 35 crosses the dense forests of Tuasa and ends in the Selva de Conques. Trail conditions may vary on the routes described; check them before your hike.
Architecture and History
The Church of San Félix dates from the 12th century and is a building of Romanesque origin. Eriste also has Romanesque origins and reached its greatest prosperity in the Middle Ages. Thus, the construction date of a specific building and the development of the village are set in different historical contexts.
Many houses in Eriste retain features of mountain architecture: thick stone walls, slate roofs and woodwork. These features illustrate the building style through its materials and craftsmanship. Together with the Church of San Félix, they show different aspects of the village’s architectural heritage.
Traditions in Eriste and the Surrounding Area
The Ruta de las Tradiciones passes through Eriste, Eresué and Sahún, introducing visitors to local customs, traditions and crafts. The carnival characters Hombre de Hiedra and Juan Gerundio, as well as the Ball de Grist, are associated with Eriste along the route. The route broadens the focus beyond buildings and houses to include local customs and festive traditions.
A Cycling Route
A mountain biking route is also named: BTT Route 22 runs from Eriste via the Linsoles Reservoir and the La Borda de Arnaldet campsite to Sesué and back to Eriste. The sequence of intermediate destinations and the return to Eriste provide a clear guide to the route described.
