Morillo De Liena: Heritage and Landscape
Accommodation in Morillo De Liena
Murillo de Liena lies at the mouth of the Barranco de Bacamorta gorge, where it meets the Ésera River. The meeting of the gorge and riverbank therefore serves as a landmark for finding your way around the village. Murillo de Liena is also next to the junction of National Road 260 and the road that descends to Graus. If you are looking for a hotel in Morillo De Liena, you can plan your stay around the landscape, local history, or cycling.
Location and Landscape
Another landmark in the landscape is the Ermita de San Martín. It lies on the northern side of Murillo de Liena in the Sierra de La Clusa. Together with the river’s confluence, this provides two distinct geographical reference points: the surroundings of the Ésera and the mountain range north of the village.
Churches and Local History
The Iglesia de San Martín is a Renaissance church dating from the late 16th century. Murillo de Liena itself also dates back to the end of that century. Both details point to the same period, but concern different aspects: the history of the village and the construction date of the church. The Ermita de la Piedad, by contrast, dates from the 18th century.
The Puente de Hierro crosses the Barranco de Bacamorta. According to local legend, it served as scaffolding during the construction of the Columbus Monument in Barcelona. Crossing the gorge is the bridge’s practical local function; the story about the monument belongs to local tradition. Another historic bridge is the Puente Barranco de la Piedad, a traditional bridge dating from the 18th to 19th centuries.
Smaller cultural artefacts also add to the character of the village. A coat of arms carved into reused limestone bears the IHS motif and may carry the date 1561. A tabernacle veil from Murillo de Liena dates from the 17th century. Thus, the buildings and objects mentioned here span the 16th to 19th centuries; each date refers to a different artefact.
Mountain Biking Routes and Sport
There are two named mountain biking routes, with different starting points and route details. The Circular a la Sierra de Morillo loop starts in Murillo de Liena. BTT Route 11 passes through the village on a circular route that starts and ends in La Puebla de Roda; its named stops include Roda de Isábena and Nocellas.
Important for navigation: BTT Route 11 is not signposted. You will need a map or GPS device for this route. This is important when preparing for this specific ride, rather than simply describing the village. The sports area on the banks of the Ésera also offers facilities for frontón, tennis, and futsal.
Annual Event
Murillo de Liena’s main festival is celebrated in honour of Saint James in late July, around 25 July on the last weekend of the month. If you would like to plan your stay around this date, check the festival dates for the relevant year. This allows you to consider local history, route planning, and a possible festival date as separate focuses for your trip.
