Sallent de Gállego: Hiking, Culture and Hotels
Accommodation in Sallent de Gállego
Sallent de Gállego lies at the upper end of the Valle de Tena, at an altitude of 1,305 metres, at the end of the Lanuza Reservoir and below Peña Foratata. Its elevation, the reservoir and Peña Foratata provide three concrete points of reference for locating the town. There are several options to focus on when planning your trip: hiking trails, protected architectural heritage and cultural events.
Hiking: Loop Trail and GR 16
The loop around the Lanuza Reservoir starts in Sallent de Gállego, passes through Lanuza and returns to Sallent along a dirt track on the right bank of the Gállego. It is just over six kilometres long and suitable for families. This clearly defines the route: it is a loop that returns to its starting point.
The GR 16 also starts in Sallent de Gállego and heads towards Panticosa, passing by the Lanuza Reservoir. There, the trail connects with the trans-Pyrenean GR 11. Compared with the lakeside loop, this trail can therefore be identified by its direction and its connection to the GR 11; no distance is given here. Trail conditions can change. Check them before setting out, especially if your plans depend on the route.
Church and Medieval Bridge
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built in the Gothic style in the early 16th century over an earlier Romanesque church. Its main altarpiece dates from 1537 and comprises sixteen painted panels. The church is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. The construction date, the earlier church and the altarpiece offer different points of reference for its architectural and artistic history.
The Puente Medieval is also one of the sights in Sallent de Gállego. A children's playground and a picnic area are right next to the medieval bridge. This spot combines an interest in a historic structure with facilities for taking a break. Another named location is the Mirador del Salto viewpoint.
Leisure and Events
The municipality's sports and leisure facilities include a swimming pool, tennis courts, equestrian facilities, a frontón court and a climbing wall. If you want to include any of these facilities in your plans, check their availability in advance, as it may change. The activity information offers different options, without requiring that they all be part of the same stay.
Hípica Sallent offers a one-hour horseback ride in the area around Sallent, by the Aguas Limpias River and in the Sandicosa area. Booking and seasonal availability may change, so it is advisable to check in advance. Pirineos Sur offers a different kind of programme: the festival uses the streets and public spaces of Sallent de Gállego for dance, contemporary circus and street parades. The programme varies with each edition. If an event is important to your travel plans, check the dates and programme for that edition.
