According to the municipality, Tierrantona is the municipal capital and the central location for services. The town center and hiking routes also help with travel planning: the parish church of La Asunción defines the center, and a trail to Muro de Roda starts in Tierrantona. Stage 31 of the GR 1 begins on a track leading from here towards Muro de Roda. This makes it possible to explore local history and routes as distinct aspects of a stay. If you are planning a visit around the annual Carnaval itinerante, check the event dates in advance.

Town Center and Building History

The town center of Tierrantona grew around the parish church of La Asunción. The church dates from the 12th century and was altered later. To understand its building history, both its date and the later changes need to be considered. Casa del Médico offers another point of reference from a different period: it dates from the 16th or 17th century. Above some of its small windows, ogee arches have been preserved. The age of the house and this specific architectural detail provide a different perspective on local history from the church in the center. Those interested in historic buildings can view the two structures as distinct examples without assigning them the same period of construction.

Hiking Routes and Landscape

Two different route options are described for planning a hike. The circular route through Tierrantona and its surroundings combines sections of the PR-HU 190 and PR-HU 191 trails with the BTT Route 12 through Sobrarbe. Its circular layout sets it apart from stage 31 of the GR 1, which runs from Tierrantona to Mesón de Ligüerre. The stage begins on the track towards Muro de Roda and passes through the El Entremón gorge. The Cinca River has cut the gorge into the rock walls. You can therefore choose between a loop combining several sections of trail and a stage with named endpoints. Which one suits your plans depends, among other things, on whether you are looking for a circular route or a trail between two places. Trail conditions and signage may change; check conditions before setting out.

Muro de Roda as an Additional Point of Interest

Muro de Roda also adds to the picture of the area around Tierrantona. The fortified site is oval and measures about 150 meters from north to south and 50 meters across. These approximate measurements illustrate the site’s elongated shape without equating its size with a trail distance. Beside a cliff, the western side of the wall has been designed as a viewpoint. Together with the trail that starts in Tierrantona, these details establish a clear connection between the town and the fortified site, while describing two distinct aspects: the trailhead and the layout of the site.

An Annual Event in the Valley

The Carnaval itinerante takes place every year and travels through the valley’s inhabited settlements. Unlike the buildings and trails, it is a recurring event that involves several settlements. The specific dates are important when deciding whether to tie your trip to the event. Check them before planning your stay around it.
