Albalate del Arzobispo brings together protected buildings, rock art and a variety of routes. If you want to choose between historic sites, archaeological features and a pilgrimage for your trip, the town offers several distinct highlights. You can tailor your visit to the topics that interest you most.

Historic buildings in the town center

The Conjunto histórico de Albalate del Arzobispo is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of historic ensemble. The Portal de Santo Domingo is among the surviving elements of the medieval walls. The Castillo de Albalate del Arzobispo is also protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural; it is open to visitors and is also used as an exhibition space.

Another defining site is the Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. The present-day church was reconstructed between 1581 and 1589 and preserves the Mudéjar tower from the earlier church. It stands in the town center beside the small Plaza Mayor. Here, the history of the building, a surviving element of the older church and a landmark in a specific town square come together. The church is also protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category.

Rock paintings and archaeological features

The rock art sites vary in number, color and subject matter. Los Estrechos I contains a total of 85 red and black Levantine and schematic figures. Los Estrechos II has 14 red paintings preserved across three panels; these include the naturalistic front part of a hind. When comparing these two sites, you can focus on the different styles and arrangements of the paintings rather than viewing them as a single collection.

Los Chaparros and the Recodo de los Chaparros have their own distinct features, too. Los Chaparros has around 115 painted figures and panels from different periods. The Recodo de los Chaparros contains schematic paintings and engravings, including crosses, grid patterns, shield-like motifs, dates and inscriptions. The Ruta de Los Estrechos is connected with Los Estrechos I and II, Los Chaparros and the Recodo de los Chaparros. A path in the Parque Cultural del Río Martín provides access to Los Chaparros.

Routes with different highlights

The routes offer different ways to explore the landscape and its cultural sites. The signposted Senda del Canal is in the Los Estrechos area and allows you to put together a circular hike. The Ruta de Lastras de San José leads to a Visigothic-medieval necropolis. There, rock-cut tombs are part of the site, along with grids of cupules and channels.

The Ruta de Valdoria is different in character: it is equipped as a via ferrata. So, if you distinguish routes by their specific focus, this is a via ferrata, as opposed to an option for a circular hike or a route with an archaeological destination. The long-distance GR 262 trail is also connected with Albalate: Stage 08 runs from Ariño to Albalate del Arzobispo and is listed as a Sendero Turístico de Aragón.

Santuario and pilgrimage route

The Santuario de la Virgen de Arcos stands on a rocky outcrop in a rugged landscape and is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. The brick church dates from the 17th century and features richly colored Baroque wall decoration. To visit the interior, you must arrange a group visit with a member of the brotherhood or the municipal guide. Be sure to plan your visit with the necessary arrangements.

The PR-TE 149 Camino Romero de la Virgen de Arcos restores the old pilgrimage route from Albalate to the Santuario. A pilgrimage to the shrine takes place on Lunes de Cuasimodo. The route and the pilgrimage highlight the connection with the Santuario both as a path and as a religious tradition, although the two need not serve the same purpose.

Cultural traditions

The Centro de Interpretación de la Cultura Popular features an exhibition on oral traditions and cultural expressions in Albalate del Arzobispo. This focus complements the buildings and rock art with a different perspective: here, the focus is on the town’s traditional stories and cultural expressions.
