Arens De Lledó by the Algars: Routes and Building History
Accommodation in Arens De Lledó
Arens De Lledó lies in the valley of the Algars River; the town center is right beside the river. The municipality includes vineyards, olive groves, almond trees and Mediterranean woodland. This brings several themes into focus for planning a trip: the landscape along the Algars, routes through the municipality and the town’s building history.
The Algars, a bathing spot and landscape routes
El Galeró is a bathing spot on the Algars. When the water level is higher, a natural pool forms there in summer. If you are interested in a place to swim, bear this seasonal condition in mind: the pool depends on a higher water level in summer.
The Ruta de les Fonts is a circular route through the ravines of Font Soberana and Valdecretas, also known as Vall-de-Queretes. The route passes through a landscape of vineyards, almond trees, olive trees and Mediterranean woodland. It is a circular hike through these ravines and the surrounding vegetation.
The Ruta de los Túmulos Funerarios Íberos takes a different approach: it is signposted and partially adapted for visitors with disabilities. The partial adaptation does not apply to the entire route. Before your visit, check local information about trail conditions and the extent of the adaptations.
Routes, stages and viewpoints
Stage 12 of the Camino Natural Matarraña–Algars passes through the town center and starts at Lo Raig. Its town-center variant runs along Calle del Río to the Algars; the river is crossed via a concrete ford built specifically for this purpose. There is also a bypass variant. This is recommended for cyclists because it avoids uneven, rocky terrain after the river crossing. The two variants therefore differ in their routes and in the recommendation for cyclists. Trail and river conditions can change; check local conditions before setting out.
Balcó de l'Algars is a viewpoint overlooking the Algars Valley, the town and the Puertos de Tortosa-Beceite. From Arens De Lledó, an approximately one-kilometer path leads there on foot along the road toward Calaceite. The approximate distance and the named views give you a concrete reference point if you want to include a scenic walk in your plans.
Building history in the town
Portal de Baix was built in 1788 as part of the former town wall. Iglesia de la Asunción is a 14th-century Gothic church and is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. These two buildings reflect different periods: the portal from the late 18th century and the church from the Middle Ages.
The remains of the former San Francisco monastery, also called Lo Convent, lie at the upper edge of the town; one façade is on Plaza de la Iglesia. The building dates from the 16th century. The former monastery was converted into three private residences. The building also retains a large blocked-up arched doorway with a weathered coat of arms of the Franciscan Order. Molí de la Vila is on the left bank of the Algars: its surviving features include an entrance facing the river with a round arch and stone remains of a press inside.
Lo Raig also offers both an architectural and a historical perspective on water. The waterfall is part of the local irrigation channel. In the past, Lo Raig served as a watering place for livestock and a place to wash clothes. The town hall tells a different building story: the Renaissance building on the main square was built in the 17th century. A small municipal jail once occupied the ground floor; in the 20th century it was converted into a barber shop.
Casa de la Tía Soledad, also called l'Escolà, is a five-story Modernist residence. Caryatids adorn the lintels above the first-floor balconies; the plant motifs change from one story to the next. The Solanar has five pointed-arch openings that ventilated the attic. Fruit and cured meat were once dried there. These details also make the house interesting to visitors curious about façade design and traditional uses of buildings.
Pilgrimage and Fiestas Mayores
A pilgrimage takes place each year on the first Saturday in May at the Ermita de San Hipólito, also called Sant Pol. The program described includes a Mass, a blessing of the municipal area, refreshments and a communal meal; the exact program may vary. Arens De Lledó’s annual Fiestas Mayores take place from August 12 to 15. They are celebrated in honor of San Hipólito, also known as Sant Pol, and Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. The program includes orchestras, activities, costumes, Tracas, Correfocs and a communal dinner. If you want to plan your trip around one of these events, check the current dates and program in advance.
