If you’re looking for a hotel in Báguena, you can plan your stay around different interests: the buildings and local history offer a cultural focus, while the Barranco de Arguilay offers a landscape-focused experience. The architecture ranges from the Mudéjar tower and parish church to a bridge and historic buildings.

Mudéjar Tower and Parish Church

The Mudéjar tower of Báguena’s church consists of five sections. The lower section is rectangular and made of ashlar; the upper sections are octagonal, built of brick, and surrounded by an elliptical shell. The blind panels also contribute to the richly varied surface: they are decorated with Mudéjar motifs such as diamonds, interlacing patterns, small arcades, and crosses. The combination of rectangular and octagonal forms, and the contrast between ashlar and brick, make the tower’s structure particularly clear. It is considered an example of the late Mudéjar style in Teruel’s Jiloca Valley.

The Parish Church of the Assumption has three naves with barrel vaults and lunettes. A dome sits above the transept, visible from the outside as a brick octagon. The church can also be appreciated through its different interior and roof forms: the naves structure the interior, while the dome and transept add another architectural focal point.

Buildings and Local History

The Puente de Báguena was built in 1734 by Luis and Francisco Subirón, father and son. Its three round-arched openings have brick on the undersides of the arches; the rest of the structure is made of dressed stone blocks. The change in materials is a distinctive detail of the bridge: brick defines the undersides of the arches, while the stone blocks make up the rest of the structure.

Casa Calvo, also known as Casa Grande, is located in the center of Báguena. The three-storey building dates from the 17th century and is constructed entirely of brick. Another 17th-century building is Casa Lucías de Báguena. It has two floors and an attic with a plastered brick gallery of thirty straight-edged openings. The two buildings can be distinguished by their height and design. San Valentín Monastery is in the town center, on its northern edge, and combines Gothic and Baroque features.

The town’s history also has a point of reference: Báguena developed on El Vayo around a castle belonging to the Knights Templar. Alongside the visible architectural forms, this offers another historical theme to explore in the town.

The Barranco de Arguilay and Its Landscape

The Barranco de Arguilay is a natural area within the municipality of Báguena. The deeply incised valley is V-shaped and ends at a cliff face where water emerges as springs. In the lower section, different types of vegetation characterize the two slopes: holm oaks grow abundantly on the south-facing slope, while the north-facing slope is home to numerous fruit trees and grapevines. The valley’s shape, springs, and vegetation offer different features to look out for when exploring the landscape.

A detour of just over three kilometers from Báguena leads to the Barranco de Arguilay along a well-maintained path. Trail conditions may vary seasonally, so check them before setting out. The barranco also offers a different travel experience from the buildings in town: here, the focus is on the shape of the valley and its slopes.
