Calaceite brings together a historic urban ensemble, museums, religious buildings and local traditions. The historic old town has been designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (Site of Cultural Interest) since 1974. Since 2002, Calaceite has also held the title of Cultural Capital of the Comarca Matarraña/Matarranya. If you are looking for hotels in Calaceite, these cultural themes can provide a useful starting point for planning your trip.

Old Town and Architecture

The historic urban ensemble preserves its original layout, remains of the town wall and fortifications, and manor houses. Its connection to the old town thus relates to an entire ensemble, not just a single building. One striking example is the Portal d'Orta: the surviving gate of the walled town was remodelled in the 18th century to house the Chapel of San Antonio de Padua. The chapel features frescoes in the vault lunettes and on the hemispherical dome; its walls are clad in ceramic tiles.

The Portal de Maella also tells the story of the town’s former fortifications. It was one of the four gates in the town wall. In the 18th century, an elevated Baroque chapel dedicated to the Virgen del Pilar was built above the gate. The two portals have different points of emphasis: at the Portal d'Orta, the focus is on its conversion into a chapel; at the Portal de Maella, it is on the elevated chapel above one of the town gates.

Museum and Places of Cultural Memory

The collections at the Juan Cabré Museum are organised into three areas: Juan Cabré, contemporary art and ethnology. The museum is housed in an 18th-century manor house, built as a private residence in 1790. In this way, different subject areas meet the history of a specific building. Casa Moix offers another architectural connection: the house was selected for reproduction in the Pueblo Español in Barcelona for the 1929 World’s Fair.

The Plaza de los Artistas was created in 1999 in honour of the artists and intellectuals who shaped Calaceite. Along with the title of Cultural Capital of the Comarca, held since 2002, the square points to the cultural significance Calaceite attaches to its artistic and intellectual history.

Hermitages and Landscape

At the Hermitage of San Cristóbal, the history of the building can be distinguished from the history of its veneration: the present building is an 18th-century Baroque structure, while veneration in Calaceite dates back at least to the 14th century. From the area around the hermitage, there are views of the Puertos de Beceite massif and several villages in Matarraña and Terra Alta.

Santa Ana offers a different focus. Its ethnographic complex includes a chapel, a hermit’s house, a spring and an old water wheel powered by animals. It lies in a landscape of olive and almond trees, as well as pine and holm oak forests. The two sites therefore differ both in their buildings and in their relationship to the landscape: San Cristóbal is associated with views of the massif and villages, while Santa Ana is set amid the complex’s agricultural surroundings and forests.

Planning Routes and Access

The Iberian settlement of Despoblado Ibérico de San Antonio is part of the Ruta Iberos en el Bajo Aragón. Visitors are advised to notify the Consorcio Patrimonio Ibérico de Aragón in advance. The old prison of Calaceite is part of the Cárceles del Mezquín-Matarraña route. Access is available as part of guided tours organised by the Calaceite Tourist Office; check before your trip whether a tour is available.

Festivals and Practical Information

The festival in honour of Saint Christopher takes place on the weekend closest to 10 July. It includes a vehicle blessing, a communal meal, a Mass, dancing and an evening dance at the hermitage. The festival of Saint Anne takes place as part of the spring festivities on the Saturday before Easter Monday; it includes outdoor meals, traditional games and dancing. If you plan to attend either festival, check the specific event dates before your trip.

On arrival, you can park on the street or next to the Calaceite sports pavilion; parking is not permitted in the old town. Check the parking information again before travelling. This will help you weigh up the historic ensemble, cultural sites, landscapes described here and scheduled festival dates when planning your stay.
