Calomarde is a good choice for a trip focused on waterfalls, gorges, and hiking trails. The Salto de Calomarde is on the Fuente del Berro River and is approximately 20 meters high. The river has cut into the Jurassic limestone here. The water falls into a deep plunge pool lined with travertine formations that continue to grow.

Waterfall, River, and Rock

Marked trails to the upper area and the foot of the waterfall start at the large parking lot by the Salto; the waterfall is visible from there. The river corridor includes juniper and pine forests, holm oaks, and riverside vegetation along the riverbed. The Rollo de Calomarde offers a geological contrast: the natural bridge is made of dolomite rock and is a remnant of a former cave. It stands elevated beside the road. While the river gorge and travertine pool define the Salto, the dolomite bridge is the focal point at the Rollo.

Hiking Trails and Orientation

The Arcos de Calomarde y Hondo de Tramacastilla route is classified as an easy hike. It follows tracks and paths and is signposted as PR-TE 2. This trail leads from Royuela along the Cascada Batida to Calomarde, then continues via the Fuente del Berro recreation area to FrĂas de AlbarracĂn.

Another described crossing is the SL-TE 40 Barranco de la Hoz. This Aragonese tourist hiking trail is 16.7 kilometers long and runs between Calomarde and FrĂas de AlbarracĂn through a gorge carved by the Fuente del Berro River. Several themed viewpoints provide information about birds, vegetation, and geology. The PR-TE 3, also an Aragonese tourist hiking trail, leads from Tramacastilla to Calomarde through a dense pine forest.

The practical features differ when choosing a route: PR-TE 2 is classified as easy, SL-TE 40 is listed as 16.7 kilometers long, and PR-TE 3 runs through a pine forest. Check local trail conditions before setting out on a hike.

Church Architecture and Patron Saint Festivities

The Church of San Pedro Apóstol is built of masonry and has two naves and a tower at the west end. Two stone blocks from a Roman funerary monument are embedded in the east wall. An inscription on one of the blocks points to a date from the end of the 1st century AD onward. The Gothic hermitage of San Gil Abad is dedicated to Calomarde’s patron saint and contains a Roman tomb associated with the Terencia family. The hermitages are closed for worship.

The three-day festivities honoring San Gil Abad are usually scheduled for August 19 to 21. The dates are chosen so that the festivities do not coincide with those in FrĂas and Royuela. They conclude with vaquilla performances in the Calomarde bullring; the comida del toro also takes place on the last day. Check the dates for your travel year, as they may vary from year to year.

Rocks and Gorges Nearby

Upstream from Calomarde, the nearby gorge of the RĂo Blanco narrows through dolomite rock. There are limestone monoliths and caves there. A short distance from Calomarde is the 70-meter-high Moricacho de la Hoz rock, which has a climbing route.
