Gúdar: Mountain Landscapes, Trails and History
Accommodation in Gúdar
Gúdar combines a characteristic mountain landscape with riverside trails, themed routes and historic buildings. Possible highlights of a trip include the Ruta de las Mariposas, sections of the GR 199 and a mountain bike route, as well as the Iglesia de Santa Bárbara and the Ermita de Santa María Magdalena. This makes it possible to consider nature and culture separately or together when planning a trip.
Mountain Landscapes and Outdoor Destinations
The landscape around Gúdar is characterized by extensive pine forests, pastures and numerous springs. Its elevated position gives the village a view over the valley of the Río Alfambra. Another viewpoint is Cerro de los Siete Lugares, from which you can see the grain fields of neighboring villages and the surrounding Sierra. Pino Lentejas is designated as a monumental tree.
The Río Alfambra also has several local connections: The stretch of river and its banks described on the Gúdar–Río Blanco–Gúdar route are part of the Reserva Natural Fluvial del río Alfambra. This designation applies to the specific stretch and its banks described here. In Barranco de las Umbrías, along the PRTE-33, there are clear, tranquil pools. Fuente de los Caños is another destination for day-trippers, while La Dehesa is a picnic area among the pines.
Routes with Different Highlights
The GR 199 – Senda Fluvial del Alfambra runs from its source in Valle de Motorritas in Gúdar to the Ríos Bajos near Galve. Stage 02 follows the Río Alfambra downhill from Valle de Motorritas, passing Fuente del Cura and Vega de Gúdar. The stage from Gúdar to Allepuz is listed as 6.9 kilometers long, with a duration of 1 hour and 55 minutes. It is catalogued as a Sendero Turístico de Aragón.
The Ruta de las Mariposas de Gúdar has a different focus: six panels cover the biology, ecology and conservation of butterflies, with trail markers and directional arrows along the route. It starts at the Ermita de Santa Quiteria in Valle de Motorritas and ends at Fuente del Cura in Vega de Gúdar. Comparing the routes therefore offers practical guidance: the Butterfly Route focuses on its information stops and two endpoints, while Stage 02 of the GR 199 focuses on the river, the stage destination and the stated walking time.
For mountain bikers, a 16.5-kilometer route leads from Gúdar to the Ermita de Santa Quiteria in Valle de Motorritas. The route passes through the valley, where there are masías and corrales built using dry-stone construction. The surrounding landscape is part of the route experience here; conditions may vary depending on the season, which you can take into account when planning.
Churches and Local History
The Iglesia de Santa Bárbara is a three-aisled church: the nave is higher than the vaulted side aisles. Paintings from 1882 have been preserved inside. The tower also has a clearly defined structure: a square base is followed by an octagonal upper section, topped by a stone spire on an octagonal base.
The Ermita de Santa María Magdalena has medieval origins. It was Gúdar’s former parish church and is connected with the village’s first settlement site on Peña de la Magdalena. From the village center, the approach follows the uphill Calle de la Magdalena. The chapel thus brings together architectural history, its former role and the history of the first settlement site.
