Historic Town Center and Architecture
Mora de Rubielos is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of Historic Complex. The preserved urban layout developed from the town’s founding in the 12th century through the 17th century. Preserved parts of the fortifications include two towers to the south, as well as the de Cabra and Alcalá gates and the Antiguo and Nuevo Portal de Rubielos.
The Iglesia de la Natividad de Nuestra Señora (ex Colegiata) was built in the mid-15th century from ashlar stone in the Levantine Gothic style and is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. The residential architecture includes a particularly notable collection of historic houses belonging to wealthy Hidalgos. The Cortel de la Fuen del Olmo manor dates back to the 15th century and was remodeled in 1751.
Tours and Cultural Events
Guided tours start at the Oficina de Turismo de Mora de Rubielos. They explore the town’s history and old town and include the former collegiate church of Santa María la Mayor and the Castillo de Mora de Rubielos. Routes and availability may change, so check before your trip.
The Festival Puerta al Mediterráneo was established in 1987 at the Castillo de Mora de Rubielos as a cultural tourism project for remote areas such as the Sierra de Gúdar-Javalambre. Dates and the program vary from year to year; check both for your intended travel period.
The traditional San Miguel festival takes place on the weekend closest to May 8. The festival includes a large bonfire in the Plaza de la Villa and a procession to the Ermita de San Miguel. Confirm the dates and program for the year you plan to visit.
Hiking Trails, Landscape and Regional Products
Numerous hiking trails from Mora de Rubielos pass through part of the Sierra de Gúdar. The short Senda Fluvial Las Tosquillas also runs nearby, offering an easy route that goes all the way around the reservoir. This lets you distinguish between a network of trails through part of the Sierra and a named, short circular route by the reservoir. You can also see the La Hiedra waterfall and the Mas de Abajo bridge at a nearby ravine.
Traditional cuisine is closely tied to local products. These include cereals, legumes, vegetables, some types of fruit, pork, lamb and rabbit, poultry, and game. One of Mora de Rubielos’s best-known products is Jamón de Teruel, which has Denominación de Origen Jamón de Teruel status. If you are interested in regional cuisine, these products offer another perspective on the town alongside its architecture and landscape.
