Orihuela Del Tremedal: Nature, Hiking Trails and Traditions
Accommodation in Orihuela Del Tremedal
For your stay in Orihuela Del Tremedal, nature, hiking trails and cultural traditions offer a range of experiences. The Tremedales de Orihuela Ramsar site is located within the municipality and includes some of its most significant wetlands. The high elevations also shape the landscape: at 1,936 metres, Caimodorro is the highest mountain in the Sierra del Tremedal and is located within the municipality.
Nature and high elevations
The A-1512 road leads from Orihuela Del Tremedal to Puerto de Orihuela, which lies at an elevation of 1,650 metres. If you plan to use this route for your journey, take seasonal road conditions into account. The Ramsar site, Caimodorro and the pass are distinct points of interest for a stay focused on wetlands and mountain scenery.
Hiking and trails
The marked long-distance GR-10 hiking trail passes through Orihuela Del Tremedal. Local SL hiking trails also cross the municipality, providing access to natural and architectural attractions. Along these trails are springs, picnic areas, viewpoints, stone rivers, wetlands and the Santuario de la Virgen del Tremedal.
One specific route is the SL-TE 43 Camino de los Griegos: it begins in Orihuela Del Tremedal, leads to the Santuario de la Virgen del Tremedal and then continues via Alto de la Canaleja to the Majada de las Vacas recreation area. Thus, the GR-10 is notable as a marked long-distance hiking trail, while the SL-TE 43 is defined by its sequence of named waypoints.
In autumn, the Centro de Interpretación offers excursions into the mountains during the deer rut. Advance reservations are required for these excursions. Check the dates and booking arrangements in advance; when hiking, you should also take current trail conditions into account.
Churches and religious traditions
Construction of the Iglesia de San Millán de la Cogolla began in 1770 in the Baroque style. It has three naves and a crossing bay topped by a dome. Its features include an organ, a late-18th-century Baroque pulpit, and altars dedicated to San Millán de la Cogolla and San José.
The Santuario de la Virgen del Tremedal stands on Cerro del Tremedal. According to tradition, the Virgin appeared on this mountain. The sanctuary is associated with a traditional Romería, which has been preserved to the present day and takes place during the patron saint festivities. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the exact dates of the festivities in advance.
Festivals and seasons
Los Mayos is considered a tradition dating back around 400 years. In Orihuela Del Tremedal, it is celebrated from 30 April and throughout the month of May. Lots are drawn among unmarried young men and women, and Los Mayos songs are sung in Plaza del Ayuntamiento. The Feria Ganadera y Artesanal has its own historical timeline: it was held without interruption until 1967 and resumed in 1999.
The timing of your trip offers a clear comparison: Los Mayos begins in late April and continues through May, while the reservation-only excursions during the deer rut are offered in autumn. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these different seasonal events may influence your plans.
