Cudillero between Harbour, Coast and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Cudillero
The fishing village of Cudillero lies in a natural amphitheatre and is arranged around its harbour. Colourful fishermen’s houses on the steep cliffs form a horseshoe-shaped settlement around the harbour. Together, the harbour, hillside setting and houses shape the character of the place. Cudillero combines a distinct fishing heritage with striking landscapes, paths and cultural sites. When planning a hotel stay in Cudillero, you can weigh up these different highlights when choosing your destination.
Coastal Landscapes from Cave to Cove
At Cabo Vidio, below the lighthouse, lies La Iglesiona, a natural cave with a rounded dome that reaches a height of 60 metres. At Playa GueirĂşa, jagged rocky islets define the coastal landscape. They were formed from the remains of a headland of quartz and slate that was destroyed by a fault. Playa del Silencio has a different character: cliffs and rocky islets of varying sizes shelter the cove. These coastal spots offer distinct landscape experiences, from the rounded cave dome to the rugged rocky islets.
Beaches and Practical Access
At Playa del Silencio, a footpath of about 500 metres, with numerous steps, leads to the beach. You can reach Playa de Oleiros via an approximately 20-minute walk through a pine grove, followed by several flights of steps. At Silencio, you can use the approximate distance as a guide; at Oleiros, the approximate walking time. Steps are part of the access to both beaches. Playa de Oleiros is suitable for sport fishing, surfing and windsurfing. At Playa GueirĂşa, access also involves following a path first and then taking steps.
Playa Concha de Artedo is 760 metres long and combines pebbles with golden sand at low tide. It has been awarded the Blue Flag. Facilities and services there include restaurants, showers, a car park and a lifeguard service; the beach is accessible on foot. Concha de Artedo therefore complements the beaches where paths with steps are an important part of planning your visit.
Paths with Different Highlights
The Entrecabos route runs along cliffs, viewpoints and small coastal villages between Faro de Cabo Vidio and Playa del Silencio. The Ruta de Miradores in Cudillero includes steep sections and steps. These routes have different features to consider when planning: Entrecabos is a coastal route with viewpoints and villages, while the Ruta de Miradores includes steep sections and steps.
Another path follows the River Sangreña to a waterfall beside an old mill. The waterfall forms a small natural pool there. The river, mill and waterfall give this excursion a different focus from the coastal paths. You can therefore choose between coastal scenery, viewpoints and a riverside stop without reducing the excursions to the same type of landscape.
Culture and Local Identity
Santa MarĂa de Soto de Luiña is one of Asturias’s most important Baroque religious ensembles. In El Pito, the church of JesĂşs Nazareno preserves the Altar of King Silo, considered the oldest altar in Spain. Also in El Pito, Palacio Selgas is part of a significant ensemble that includes a church and schools. Its landscape architecture and valuable works of art make it another cultural highlight.
Cudillero’s local identity includes the name Villa Pixueta and the Pixueto speech tradition. The Brañas Vaqueiras route also leads to a distinctive point of historical interest: it begins at the church of San MartĂn de Luiña. An inscription on the floor there recalls the exclusion of the vaqueiros de alzada. These places and traditions complement the coastal landscape with religious heritage, regional history and linguistic identity.
