The Sierra del Acebo crosses Grandas de Salime, dividing the area between the Navia and Agüeira river basins. This landscape provides a setting for archaeological sites, museums and trails with a variety of themes. In the east, part of the area lies within the protected landscape of Sierras de Carondio y Valledor.

Landscape and viewpoints

The Navia is considered particularly suitable for trout fishing. Mirador Boca de la Ballena offers a different view of the river and its surroundings: from the concrete lookout above the Navia, you can see the reservoir and the Salime dam. A tunnel cut into the rock leads there from the AS-14. Check road conditions locally before planning the drive.

Salto de Salime is used to generate hydroelectric power and is compatible with water sports and navigation. Check local access conditions. The landscape, water and technical use shape the character of the area.

Archaeology around Castro

The Museo Castro Chao Samartín is right next to the ruins of the archaeological site in Castro, on a hillside with panoramic views of the complex and the Camino de Santiago as it passes through Grandas de Salime. The museum displays more than 350 original objects, offering insights into life in ancient Ocela. Visits to the Chao Samartín site begin at the museum and are always guided. Check visiting times before your trip. From Grandas de Salime, you can reach the Museo del Chao Samartín via the AS-28 towards Puerto del Acebo.

Castro de Pelóu also tells the story of a long history of settlement, dating back to the beginning of the Iron Age. The site was fortified again in the 1st and 4th centuries AD. Another route, the Ruta de Pousabadelle, crosses a medieval stone bridge dating from the 14th century and passes through Castro, where the Chao Samartín site is located.

Museums and architectural heritage

The Museo Etnográfico de Grandas de Salime is spread across Casa Rectoral, Casa del Molinero and A Casoa. It includes more than 3,000 square metres of exhibition space devoted to the trades and daily life of the farming communities of western Asturias. Traditional architectural and household features include a mill, a granary, a raised storehouse and a chapel. The three buildings and their varied exhibits give the museum visit a tangible connection to construction methods and everyday life.

The original church of the Colegiata El Salvador dates back to the 12th century. Its Romanesque portal, with four semicircular archivolts, is preserved inside the present-day church. The Central Hidroeléctrica de Salime, built between 1945 and 1955, is part of the area’s industrial history. It is considered one of Spain’s most significant and monumental examples of water-related industrial heritage.

La Xorenga is considered the largest rock art and engraving ensemble in Asturias. The carvings extend across shale outcrops for about 500 metres. This rock art provides another way to explore the area’s past, alongside its archaeological sites and architectural heritage.

Walking and cycling routes

The Camino Primitivo stage from Grandas de Salime to Puerto del Acebo is the final stage of the route in Asturias. It runs entirely through Grandas de Salime, covers 13.2 kilometres and follows mainly dirt or gravel tracks through natural areas between small settlements. By contrast, a cycling stage of the Camino Primitivo runs from Grandas de Salime to Fonsagrada: it is 27 kilometres long, linear, rated easy and designed for road bikes.

The two routes can be compared by destination, length and mode of travel: the stage to Puerto del Acebo is 13.2 kilometres, while the cycling stage to Fonsagrada covers 27 kilometres. If you would rather combine a bike ride with scenic views, the Ruta de los Entornos de Grandas starts near the ethnographic museum. It follows the old Camino de Santiago and offers panoramic views of rivers, reservoirs and mountains.
