Proaza: Nature Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Proaza
Proaza combines experiences in nature with places where history and design are visible. The Senda del Oso offers opportunities for hiking and cycling; Casa del Oso is dedicated, among other things, to biodiversity. Other highlights include a defensive tower, a medieval village ensemble and a hydroelectric power station designed by an architect and artist. This gives you scope to pursue different interests when planning your trip, rather than reducing Proaza to a single attraction.
Senda del Oso: Hiking, Cycling and Scenery
The first section of the Senda del Oso follows the former route of a mining railway and ends in Caranga Baxu in Proaza. The route’s former use is part of its character, alongside hiking and cycling. The Tuñón–Caranga section is an easy route suitable for families. Check the latest conditions before setting out.
The route through the Peñas Xuntas gorge offers a different perspective on the landscape. It runs alongside the river and passes through countryside characterised by holm oaks before reaching Proaza. In contrast to the former railway route, the river and vegetation take centre stage here. If you like to consider different aspects of nature when planning a trip, you can factor these differences into your itinerary.
Casa del Oso and Learning About Nature
Since 1996, Casa del Oso has been the official headquarters of the FundaciĂłn Oso de Asturias. The ground floor houses a tourist information centre, a gift shop and a museum or exhibition area. Visitor facilities may change; check their current availability before visiting.
The garden beside Casa del Oso is designed as an educational space. Information panels cover biodiversity and native plant species; lifelike representations of animal tracks are also on display. Plant diversity and animal tracks offer two different ways to engage with nature. Together with the visitor areas inside the building, they create an approach that brings information and nature topics together.
Defensive Tower, Hydroelectric Power and Architectural History
The Torre del Campo was built in 1495. The defensive structure stands on a small hill; the Payón stream acts as a natural moat. The combination of its elevated position and the watercourse illustrates the building’s defensive function and links the tower’s history with the features of the terrain.
The Central HidroelĂ©ctrica de Proaza offers a different architectural point of interest. It was designed by JoaquĂn Vaquero Palacios, who was both an architect and an artist. Alongside the defensive architecture of the Torre del Campo, it presents another topic: the design of a hydroelectric power station by someone who worked in both professions. If you are interested in architectural history, you can focus your stay on these different forms and connections.
Banduxu and Traditional Crafts
Banduxu preserves a medieval architectural ensemble and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest) in 2009. If you arrive by car, you must park at the entrance to the village; traffic within the village is restricted to residents. Check this access restriction before arriving. It is important to plan for this restriction if you intend to visit Banduxu by car.
The Mercáu de l'Alcordanza programme includes demonstrations and workshops in wood carving, basket weaving and traditional wooden clog making. Workshop participation may vary with each edition. The event is associated with the Jornadas Gastronómicas de la Seronda, which showcase Asturian products such as chestnut stew, wild boar and apple compote. The food selection may also vary from one edition to the next. Traditional crafts and regional products are thus presented as two distinct aspects of the event programme.
