Santa Eulalia de Oscos: Routes, Crafts and History
Accommodation in Santa Eulalia De Oscos
You can explore Santa Eulalia de Oscos through a variety of interests: trails through the RĂo Eo, Oscos e Terras do BurĂłn Biosphere Reserve, evidence of ironworking, textile crafts and swimming spots. Each place tells a different storyâfrom working with metal and hydraulic systems to using natural materials. When planning your trip, you can therefore start by considering whether hiking, culture or a specific event date should take priority.
Hiking Routes and Historic Sites
The Ruta del ForcĂłn de los RĂos runs through the Biosphere Reserve and leads to the historic site of A ValĂa. It is considered the birthplace of clockmakers and the inventor Lombardia. This route therefore brings together the landscape and a place with a distinctive history of clockmaking and invention.
The starting point for the Ruta da Mina das Talladas is explicitly named: it begins in the square in Santa Eulalia de Oscos. Check access locally. The Ruta de A Seimeira has a different feature: it passes abandoned buildings in A Ancadeira. The routes thus offer different reference points for planningâa starting point in the town or traces of historic buildings along the way.
Crafts and Ironworking
The Casa Natal del Marqués de Sargadelos is an exhibition space about the life and work of Antonio Raimundo Ibåñez, the Marqués de Sargadelos. It is housed in a restored 18th-century building. The program includes workshops and hands-on experiences for everyone aged six and over. These focus on traditional occupations, crafts and products associated with the region. As the workshop program may change, it is advisable to check the current offering before your visit.
At the fully restored and renovated Conjunto EtnogrĂĄfico de Mazonovo, the iron industry is brought to life. The forge was arranged around two areas with hydraulic systems: the hammer, known in Spanish as a âmazo,â and large bellows, called âbarquines.â There was also a furnace. These details offer a concrete insight into the forgeâs technical equipment without reducing its different work areas to a single machine.
Other places also have their own historical and craft highlights. The Casa de Aquel Cabo in Barcia was built in 1762. At El Telar de Irene, natural materials such as wool, silk, cotton and linen are used. The exhibition and workshop can be visited free of charge by prior appointment; confirm your appointment before visiting.
Swimming Spots and Nature Experiences
If you would like to include swimming in your plans, youâll find two bathing spots described in different ways. Ponte de A Coba is described as a suitable swimming spot on the Ruta de A Coba. The Ărea Recreativa de Ferreira lies on the AgĂŒeira River and offers a natural swimming area. Seasonal conditions for use may change there; check them before your visit.
Other experiences include visiting an apiary. You can learn how bees live and work, and how honey, pollen, propolis and royal jelly are produced. Check that visits are available before booking.
Events and Practical Information
The Feria de ArtesanĂa y Productos Agroalimentarios takes place every year on Good Friday in Santa Eulalia de Oscos. The Encuentro de Ferreiros is held every two years.
