Sobrescobio: Trails, Water and Cheese Traditions
Accommodation in Sobrescobio
Sobrescobio is best experienced along its trails: in Campiellos, a path about 680 metres long, adapted for people with reduced mobility, leads to a viewpoint; the Ruta del Alba is about 14 kilometres long as a round trip. There is also a reservoir with opportunities for waterbird watching, historic routes and regional cheese traditions. This gives you a choice of different themes and trail lengths when planning your trip.
Trails with Different Focuses
The Senda Accesible de Campiellos ends at a viewpoint with information panels, as well as texts and drawings in Braille. The trail thus combines a viewpoint with information presented in several formats. Check local conditions before your trip.
The Ruta del Alba starts in the village of Soto in the municipality of Sobrescobio. It is designated a natural monument and is about 14 kilometres long as a round trip. Its water-rich valley is characterised by pools, calm stretches of water, small cascades and springs. The roughly 680 metres of the Senda Accesible de Campiellos and the approximately 14 kilometres of the Ruta del Alba provide a concrete comparison of trail lengths to help you plan.
Reservoir and Mountain Views
The Rioseco Reservoir is designated a wildlife reserve. At its far end, there is a hide for observing waterbirds. Footpaths, viewpoints and nature areas suitable for families complement the visitor facilities. The Senda Verde El TorrexĂłn offers another perspective: it leads to the Mirador de Cuyacerra, from which you can see the reservoir and the medieval TorrexĂłn.
The trails above the reservoir also offer varied scenery. The Ruta de la Sierra del CrespĂłn passes through meadows and chestnut groves towards the Vallimaor mountain pasture. From the summit of La Xamoca, views extend across the NalĂłn Valley, the reservoirs, the Foces del LlaĂmo, the Sierra del CrespĂłn and Peña Mayor. Rusecu, also known as Rioseco, is also the starting point for several inland tours to Cangas de OnĂs.
Historic Traces and Water Knowledge
Between Rioseco and AnzĂł, the CamĂn d'Aceu follows the preserved traces of an old road through Sobrescobio and the steep gorges of the NalĂłn. In Soto, hĂłrreos, wooden balconies and an old washhouse are characteristic of the traditional architecture passed down through generations. These trails through the landscape can be combined with other local cultural interests.
The Casa del Agua in Rioseco is temporarily closed; check whether it has reopened before visiting. The centre presents water in an interactive way and includes teaching and demonstration materials for experimentation and observation. The museum space divides the subject into water as a substance, water’s influence on the natural environment, and hydropower, water distribution and wastewater disposal. The Casa del Agua can be reached via the AS-17 between Avilés and Puerto de Tarna.
Queso CasĂn and October Events
Queso CasĂn is one of Spain’s oldest cheeses and is made, among other places, in Sobrescobio, one of three Asturian municipalities where it is produced. The cheese is made from cow’s milk, and the curds are kneaded several times. This process and its long tradition give the regional product a distinctive place in Sobrescobio’s culinary scene.
The Jornadas GastronĂłmicas featuring Pitu de Caleya and trout in Sobrescobio are held on the third weekend of October. If you would like to plan your visit around the event, check the programme in advance. When choosing a hotel for your trip, the different attractions may help guide your decision: trail lengths, waterscapes, viewpoints, culture and regional cuisine all offer different ways to enjoy your stay.
