Villayón: Waterfalls and Dolmens
Accommodation in Villayón
Villayón showcases its varied landscape, where peaks, water and traces of the past come together. Pico Villayón is located in the main town and rises to 521 metres; from its summit, panoramic views extend as far as the Cantabrian Sea. There are also waterfalls, a challenging hike to the Dolmen de Barandón, and water sports in Arbón.
Peaks, waterfalls and trails
One striking natural feature is the Cascadas de Oneta: this natural monument comprises three waterfalls cascading down over a short distance. They flow year-round and are set amid dense vegetation along the Río Oneta, near the village of Oneta. Remains of watermills can be seen along the Cascadas. These mill ruins add a glimpse of built heritage to the waterside landscape.
Pozo Mouro is also set amid waterfalls, lush vegetation and native trees. The surrounding area is also home to an old mill and a waterfall surrounded by several rocks. The Cascada de Méxica is notable for its shape and the stories associated with it: the horsetail-shaped waterfall has a drop of ten metres. According to a local legend, a golden castle stood beneath the cave, where a Moorish king lived with his two enchanted, golden-haired daughters.
The Sierra de Carondio is a scenic attraction in Villayón and is suitable for outdoor activities. The Villayón–Oneta cycling route also lies within the Parque Histórico del Navia. For those interested in archaeology, the Dolmen de Barandón is another notable landmark: this megalithic monument is more than 5,000 years old and is also known as the Dolmen de Entrerríos or Llastra da Filadoira.
The route from Barandón to the dolmen is challenging and follows cattle paths and crosses streams. Take the nature of the route into account when planning your trip, and check current trail conditions before setting out.
Water sports and culture
The Embalse de Arbón is suitable for canoeing, rowing and sailing. Canoeing and rowing are offered or practised as water sports at the Campo de Remo in Arbón. If you are planning to sail, you can consider the Embalse de Arbón as an option. Local conditions may vary; check them in advance.
The Iglesia de Arbón dates from the late 17th century. It includes a side chapel from the 15th to 16th century, decorated with wall paintings. The church thus brings together features from different historical periods.
The Centro de Interpretación de los Paisajes Protegidos de Montaña explains the significance of the protected landscape of the Sierras de Carondio y Valledor, along with its cultural, archaeological, ethnographic and natural resources. If you are planning a visit, check current access arrangements beforehand.
