Playa Migjorn refers to Formentera’s south coast, which stretches for five kilometers of beach. Several named coves are separated by rocky and sandy areas. The name therefore encompasses a coastal landscape with different stretches of beach and rock. At Playa de Migjorn, the coast forms a large crescent. Wind and sea occasionally shape small caves there; the exact shape of the shoreline can change seasonally.

Coast and stretches of beach

The coastal landscape includes clear water and sandy seabeds as well as seabeds covered with Posidonia. The coast of Playa de Migjorn is part of the Área Natural de Especial Interés de Platja de Migjorn-Costa de Tramuntana. You can snorkel in the clear water; local conditions may vary. The seabed and the protected natural area are also aspects of the coast, in addition to its beaches.

At Es Arenals beach, dunes surround the shallow turquoise water. You can stand for many meters into the water there. There is also a kayak rental service and a lifeguard service; both may vary seasonally. Es Copinar has a different beach character: clear water and white sand meet small rocky areas there. If you compare stretches of beach, these specific features can help you get your bearings without treating the coves as all the same.

Compare routes and journey times

Route 24 connects the Tramuntana coast with the south coast. It follows a path bordering a pine and juniper forest and ends at Es Copinar, one of Migjorn’s last beaches. The route is 1.4 kilometers long; it takes 25 minutes on foot and ten minutes by bicycle. It is rated as moderate. The actual duration may vary depending on conditions.

The Es Carnatge – Es Arenals route is also rated as moderate. It is 1.5 kilometers long, leads to Es Arenals beach, and is listed as taking 25 minutes on foot or ten minutes by bicycle. Compared with Route 24, it is 100 meters longer; the listed walking and cycling times and difficulty level are the same for both. This lets you compare the time required for the two routes, while their different endpoints lead to different stretches of beach.

Route 21 Sant Ferran – Cala En Baster – Platja de Migjorn follows inland paths with a distinctly agricultural character and ends in Migjorn. Another option is the Es Pujols – Es Ca Marí route: it directly connects the coastal areas of Llevant and Migjorn and leads to Es Ca Marí, a beach area of Playa de Migjorn. Es Ca Marí is one of the more accessible areas of Migjorn by vehicle. These routes therefore differ both in their described landscapes and in their respective destinations.

Getting there and the surrounding area

Playa de Migjorn is easy to reach via a road with a signposted access route; parking is available nearby. Access regulations may change due to seasonal management or local traffic measures. Therefore, check the latest access information before your visit. Playa de Migjorn can also be reached by bicycle from Sant Francesc; conditions may vary seasonally. Local traffic conditions may also change, which should be taken into account when traveling to Es Ca Marí.

Nearby, Caló des Mort lies between Playa de Migjorn and Es Ram. A hiking trail about 800 meters long leads down to the cove; trail conditions may change. If you plan to make this detour, check the trail conditions before your visit. When looking for a hotel in Platja De Migjorn, the differences between stretches of beach, routes, and access can help you assess the aspects of the south coast that matter for your travel plans.
