Hiking and culture in Urigoiti

Urigoiti offers hiking routes with different destinations and route profiles, as well as a historical connection to San Lorenzo. The routes differ in destination, route type, length, duration and elevation gain. Would you like a linear route to the Gorbeia Cross or a circular hike taking in Aldabide Waterfall and Atxular Pass? Another hike leads to the Aldabide spring and runs beneath the steep rock faces of the protected Itzina biotope.

Routes by duration, route type and elevation gain

The linear route from Urigoiti to the Gorbeia Cross is 11.4 kilometres long; its stated duration is four hours and 45 minutes, with an elevation gain of 1,158 metres. The circular hike from Urigoiti to Aldabide Waterfall and Atxular Pass covers 8.3 kilometres and takes three hours and 30 minutes. The Aldabide–Atxular route is also listed as moderately difficult, with an elevation gain of 707 metres. Compared with the linear route, the circular hike is 3.1 kilometres shorter; its stated duration is one hour and 15 minutes less, and its listed elevation gain is 451 metres lower. This gives you four specific points to compare when planning: time, elevation gain, route type and destination. This makes for a more precise comparison than a broad classification based solely on route length. One hike follows a linear route to the Gorbeia Cross, while the other is described as a circular hike to the waterfall and pass.

Landscape around Aldabide and Atxular

The Aldabide–Atxular route passes through beech forests and pastureland to Atxular Pass, a natural opening in the rock with a view. This gives the circular hike a specific landscape profile in addition to its distance, duration and elevation gain. The hike to the Aldabide spring has a different focus: it starts in Urigoiti and runs beneath the steep rock faces of the protected Itzina biotope. When comparing the hikes, you can therefore consider not only route type and duration, but also the landscape described for each one.

San Lorenzo de Urigoiti

San Lorenzo de Urigoiti offers a historical point of interest away from the hiking routes. The church underwent extensive renovation in the 19th century; a Romanesque window, probably dating from the 13th century, has been preserved. The contrast between the renovations and the probably older window brings together two different periods in the building’s history.

Getting to Urigoiti

From Zubiaur in Orozko, the route follows the BI-3513 road towards Areatza; at Ibarra, turn off towards Urigoiti. You can plan the drive as a sequence: follow the signposted road from your starting point towards Areatza until the turn-off at Ibarra. When planning your trip, you can consider the drive separately from your choice of hike: the drive takes you to Urigoiti, and the routes start there or lead to their respective destinations. This lets you first focus on getting there and then on choosing the right route.
