Discover Éibar: Industrial Heritage, Architecture and Arrate
Accommodation in Éibar
Explore Éibar through its industrial history, buildings and the attractions around Arrate. The Museo de la Industria Armera showcases weapons and products made in Éibar, including bicycles, motorcycles and sewing machines. The collection brings the city’s industrial heritage to life through actual products and covers a range of different product types.
Industrial History and Architecture
Portalea also links Éibar’s cultural life with its industrial history: today, it is the city’s cultural centre. Raimundo Alberdi y Abaunz designed the building, which was constructed in the late 1930s as the AYA (Aguirre y Aranzabal) shotgun factory. The museum and Portalea offer different perspectives: one focuses on weapons and products made in Éibar, while the other is a building with a specific former factory use.
The Parroquia de San Andres was built in the 16th and 17th centuries. It is primarily Gothic, with Renaissance and Baroque influences. Its main altarpiece is also associated with a specific year: Andrés de Araoz began work on it in 1567. The Ayuntamiento de Eibar offers a later point of reference. This neoclassical architectural landmark in the Basque Country was inaugurated in 1901. Its construction period, style and dates offer different clues for understanding Éibar’s architecture.
At the edge of Éibar, the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Azitain stands at the foot of the Camino Real to Elgoibar, next to the Unzueta manor house. The chapel houses a beardless crucifix that may date from the 13th or 14th century. Very few depictions of this kind exist in Europe. The Ermita is notable both for its location on the historic road and for this unusual work of art.
Arrate: Sanctuary, Cycling and Circular Route
The first documented records of the Santuario de Arrate date from 1498; the present building dates back to the early 17th century. These two dates refer to different things: the earliest records of the sanctuary and the age of the current building. Each year, a stage of the Itzulia, the Tour of the Basque Country, finishes at Alto de Arrate.
From Arrate, the approved PR-GI 215 circular hiking trail, “Ermitas bajo el Kalamua,” follows the slope of Mount Kalamua. The route is 12.6 kilometres long. If you are planning to hike it, check trail conditions before setting out. Arrate is also home to the Centro de Interpretación del Frente de la Guerra Civil de Eibar. If you are planning a visit, check the visitor arrangements before travelling.
Markets, Competitions and Basque Pelota
The Concurso de Gildas takes place in Éibar in March, and the Concurso de Pintxos in November. If you want to plan your trip around one of the competitions, check the dates for your travel year. Local farmers sell local and seasonal produce at Errebal Plaza. If you are planning to visit the market, it is worth checking the latest dates and what is on offer beforehand.
The Frontón Astelena offers another perspective on Éibar: the sports venue was inaugurated in 1904 and hosts top-level Basque pelota matches. Together with the buildings, museum and attractions around Arrate, it offers several ways to plan your trip—from industrial history and architecture to hiking, cycling and local competitions.
