Elgoibar: Industrial Heritage, Architecture and the Dolmen Route
Accommodation in Elgoibar
Elgoibar can be explored from several perspectives: the history of machine tools, historic buildings and routes focused on archaeology or rural heritage. If you are looking for a hotel in Elgoibar, you can first consider whether your trip is more about technology and architectural history or about a particular route. The sights and routes differ both in their subject matter and in their character.
Industrial History and Architecture
The Museo de la Máquina-Herramienta is a “living” museum with working machine tools. It recreates a mechanical workshop from the mid-19th century. Guided tours explain the transition from craft methods used between the 14th and 19th centuries to industrial processes that emerged in the Bajo Deba region from the mid-19th century onwards. In this way, the museum connects specific machine technology with a comparison across time: the tours trace the shift from craft work to the industrial processes that developed in the region.
The Church of San Bartolomé is located in Foruen plaza in Elgoibar and is dedicated to the town’s patron saint. It was created by Longa, Larraza and Ibero and inaugurated in 1716 after twenty-five years of construction. The building is in the Escorial style; its features include a Baroque tower and an altar with a distinctly classical character. Its construction period, style and furnishings offer different clues for understanding the church’s history and architecture.
Another glimpse into architectural history is offered by the former monastery of San BartolomĂ© de Olaso. MartĂn Sancho built the monastery church in 1459. The monastery and church have disappeared; what remains is the entrance, which also serves as the entrance to Olaso cemetery and is considered historically and artistically significant. Unlike San BartolomĂ©, where the church building and its stylistic features are central, at Olaso it is the entrance that remains as a testament to the vanished monastery and church.
The Zabale Torre farmhouse preserves original architectural elements from the 15th century: pointed-arch portals, paired windows, loopholes and corbels. These details offer different ways to look at historic architectural forms. The portals and windows shape the design of the openings; the loopholes and corbels are also among the farmhouse’s surviving features.
The history of technology extends beyond the museum. The Barrena Berri power station lies on the banks of the Deba River and was the first power station installed in the region. It has a horizontal Kaplan turbine with an output of 500 kW. Together with the machine tools in the museum, the power station represents another aspect of Elgoibar’s technological history: the development of energy-generating facilities.
Routes with Different Themes
The Ruta de los DĂłlmenes runs for 11 km along the Karakate-Iturriberri ridge. A total of 19 dolmens and megalithic features can be discovered along the route. It starts at the Mintxeta municipal sports centre. The 11 km ridge section is of low difficulty, with little elevation gain, and is suitable for families. Its length, elevation profile and archaeological features together give a clear picture of this route.
Los secretos de Sallobente offers a different kind of walk. The route passes through Elgoibar’s two districts of Sallobente-Ermuaran and Azkue, which have particularly well preserved their rural character. Unlike the Ruta de los Dólmenes, the focus here is not on megalithic finds or the elevation profile of a ridge section, but on the two districts and their preserved rural character. This distinction can help you choose a route that matches the subject you are interested in during your stay.
Information and Services at Mintxeta
The Punto de Acogida de Mintxeta offers tourist information about Elgoibar and the wider region, as well as detailed information about suitable routes. Services also include bicycle and helmet hire, toilets, showers, first aid, an area for cleaning and repairing bicycles, and bicycle parking. As the availability of these services may change, it is advisable to check before travelling.
Local produce is also among Elgoibar’s documented event themes: the XXI Feria Especial de Trinidad included the sale of agricultural products from the region in 2024. The programme may vary from one edition to the next.
