Errezil offers travelers specific points of interest in its mountain landscape, along its hiking trails and in its local traditions. Most of the Hernio Massif lies within the municipality. The 1,013-meter-high Gazume peak is also largely within Errezil’s boundaries. This places a larger mountain area and an individual peak side by side as distinct reference points. The hiking trails add local apple culture and a connection toward Zestoa to this natural setting; religious traditions provide further reasons to plan a trip.

Hernio-Gazume: Landscape and Wildlife

The Hernio-Gazume ZEC is a 2,158-hectare limestone massif with karst terrain and high ecological and landscape value. The area is home to threatened animal species, including wood-decaying insects, bats and birds of prey such as griffon and Egyptian vultures. The landscape, geological character and wildlife offer different perspectives on this natural area. The 2,158-hectare area indicates the scale of the massif; Gazume represents a specific, named point within the mountain landscape as an individual peak. For travel planning, this information points to different scales: the ZEC describes a vast massif, while Gazume is a single peak. At the same time, the karst terrain and wildlife show that the nature of Hernio-Gazume cannot be understood solely in terms of its elevation.

Hiking Trails with Different Highlights

The Ibarbi Apple Trail, SL-Gi 48, is a 3.5-kilometer local hiking trail that passes through Errezil. It begins in the central square, where ox-pulling trials are held. Information panels along the route explain apple growing and apple culture. Ibarbi therefore combines a specific trail length with a clear theme and a starting point that also has a local connection.

The PR-Gi 143 hiking trail connects Errezil and Zestoa in both directions and is 13.7 kilometers long. In direct comparison, it is considerably longer than the 3.5-kilometer Apple Trail. The two trails also differ in their connection to local places: Ibarbi passes through Errezil and focuses on apple culture, while the PR-Gi 143 links Errezil and Zestoa. When choosing a route, you can weigh up the distance, theme and places named. This comparison helps answer a practical planning question: should local apple culture be the focus, or a longer connection between two towns?

Religious Traditions and Dates

Local religious traditions also give travelers specific points of interest in Errezil. The hermitage of San Antonio is connected to the village of Errezil’s Stations of the Cross by stone crosses. The crosses form the link between the hermitage and the village’s Stations of the Cross; together, the building, crosses and route create a connected cultural point of interest. Errezil’s patron saint’s festival in honor of Saint Martin takes place on November 11. The pilgrimages to Hernio take place on August 29, the following Sunday and the three Sundays after that. These dates provide two different temporal reference points: a fixed calendar date for the patron saint’s festival and several consecutive Sundays for the pilgrimages. If you are planning your trip specifically around a pilgrimage, check the Sundays for the relevant year.
