Getaria offers several specific starting points for planning a trip: Getariako Txakolina, the harbour, which serves both fishing and yachts, historic buildings, and hiking options. When comparing hotels in Getaria, you can first decide whether wine and cuisine, architectural history or walking routes will shape your stay. The Elkano re-enactment is also relevant when planning your dates: it takes place during the patron saint festivities every four years. Check the specific festival dates in advance if you want to plan your visit around the performance.

Txakoli, the harbour and the grilling tradition

Getariako Txakolina is made from the native Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Beltza grape varieties. Hondarrabi Zuri is the main variety used for Txakoli with the D.O. Getariako Txakolina designation. Visitors can tour wineries, walk through the vineyards and taste the wine. This makes it possible to combine a wine-focused visit with several different activities.

The harbour is also part of Getaria’s distinctive character: it serves both as a fishing harbour and a marina. The Getariako itsas parrilla tradition brings together high-quality fish from the fishing harbour and a centuries-old art of grilling. This gives visitors two culinary perspectives to explore: wine production, with tastings and vineyard walks, and the local fish and grilling tradition.

Buildings and Elkano

The parish church of San Salvador in Getaria is considered the most important Gothic building in Gipuzkoa and was declared a national monument at the end of the 19th century. Beneath the church is Katrapona, a passage connecting Calle Mayor (Kale Nagusia) with the steps leading down to the harbour. Part of the old fortifications has been preserved there.

The Ermita de San Prudencio is located in the San Prudentzio Auzoa neighbourhood. This medieval chapel dates from the 14th to 15th centuries. Fashion history is another distinct focus: the Museo Cristóbal Balenciaga opened in Getaria on 7 June 2011 and is dedicated exclusively to a fashion designer. Its clothing collection includes designs by Cristóbal Balenciaga from 1912 to 1971.

Elkano, Mundubira Espazioa features an exhibition about Juan Sebastián Elkano, his life shaped by the sea, and his role as captain of the voyage that changed the world. The re-enactment of Elkano’s landing takes place during the patron saint festivities every four years. If this date is important for your trip, use the specific festival dates as a guide and check them in advance.

Routes and walking times

For a shorter hike, the family route Atalaya de San Antón is described as 1.7 kilometres long, with a total ascent of 93 metres and an estimated walking time of 30 minutes. The distance, ascent and time provide different points of reference for planning your day; the walking time is an estimate. A short hiking route on Monte San Antón also leads to the summit and passes the still-operational lighthouse.

The coastal path from Zarautz to Getaria is about 4.5 kilometres long. It takes approximately 45 minutes without breaks; walking time depends on conditions and any stops along the way. Another option is the circular PR-Gi 202: Ruta del Txakoli, which connects Zumaia, Getaria and Zarautz with the inland neighbourhoods and settlements of Urdaneta and Aizarnazabal. Getaria can be chosen as the starting point for this route. The three routes differ in length and course: from a short circular route on San Antón, to the coastal path, to a route connecting several towns.

Getting there by bus

Lurraldebus/Euskotren bus routes UK09, UK10 and UK11 connect Donostia, Zarautz, Getaria and Zumaia; buses run approximately every 30 minutes. Check the timetable and current service frequency before travelling. This will help you coordinate your journey with planned visits, hikes or other activities.
