Discover Legazpi: Industrial Heritage and Architecture
Accommodation in Legazpi
Legazpi offers several clearly distinct highlights: the relationship between art and industry, historic ironworking, architectural heritage and food production. There are also two natural areas of particularly high value, as well as a route for pedestrians and cyclists. Visit timings are important when planning your trip: advance booking is required for Chillida Lantoki and bread-making visits; DĂa de Mirandaola takes place on a designated Sunday.
Industry, Art and Everyday History
Chillida Lantoki is a former factory that has been converted into a museum. Through the work of Eduardo Chillida, the museum explores the relationship between art and industry, showcasing his paper and ironworking workshops. The Museo del Hierro Vasco, located in a former foundry in Legazpi, provides another link to the town’s industrial history. Visits to Chillida Lantoki require an advance appointment. Check this requirement before your trip, as it may change.
The history of ironworking includes the FerrerĂa de Mirandaola, the only surviving one of the seven forges that existed in Legazpi in the 15th century. Santa Cruz de Mirandaola was built in 1952 as an architectural ensemble with the forge. The two sites refer to different historical dates: the 15th-century forges and the 1952 ensemble.
The Ruta Obrera offers a different perspective in the San Ignacio neighbourhood and its surroundings. It reconstructs an apartment, a classroom and a chapel from the 1950s. This shifts the focus beyond production sites to the homes, classrooms and chapels of the period.
Mills, Bread and Cheese
The Igaralde Bekoa farmhouse contains a 16th-century mill. It still grinds grain using the water power of the Urola River. Visitors interested in food production can explore other distinct topics: Igaralde-Rincón del Pan offers visits that include bread-making, for which an appointment is required in advance. The Ecomuseo del Pastoreo shows where and how Idiazabal sheep’s cheese, which has a protected designation of origin, is made.
For train travel, Brinkola station is relevant: the farmhouse and Igaralde mill are nearby, and the train journey is via this station. Check current train connections before travelling.
Architectural Heritage: Parish Church, Manor Houses and Hermitage
The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción has a basilica-style floor plan with three naves, Renaissance-style columns, a Gothic vault and a Baroque main altarpiece. Its floor plan, columns and vault offer distinct architectural features to observe.
The Bikuña Palace is a manor house built at the end of the 17th century. Its façade is made of ashlar and brick and features four balconies and a coat of arms; the forecourt is paved with sandstone slabs. Palacio Elorregi is a Basque manor house with a double arcade, ashlar masonry and loopholes. Both buildings offer specific architectural details that make it possible to compare their façades and forms.
San Miguel de Motxorroko is traditionally considered the oldest hermitage in the Legazpi Valley. San Juan de Telleriarte houses a sculpture of John the Baptist by Julio Beobide. The date 1824 is also inscribed on the lintel of San Juan de Telleriarte.
Natural Areas and a Route for Pedestrians and Cyclists
The two natural areas of particularly high value in Legazpi include Parque Natural de Aizkorri-Aratz and Lugar de InterĂ©s NaturalĂstico de Korostiaga. One route described in detail is the VĂa Verde del Urola: it starts in Mirandaola Park in Legazpi and runs for 37.5 kilometres. Numerous tunnels and bridges mark the route, which is suitable for both pedestrians and cyclists.
Date of DĂa de Mirandaola
DĂa de Mirandaola takes place on the Sunday after 4 May. The programme includes the Santa Cruz procession, a Mass and a romerĂa with dancing, music and traditional food. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the specific event date before your trip.
