Discover Oiartzun: Natural Landscapes and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Oiartzun
Oiartzun is a good fit for travellers who want to take natural landscapes, historic buildings and cultural heritage into account when choosing a destination. If you are looking for a hotel in Oiartzun, you can plan your stay around these interests: Aiako Harria and the Vía Verde de Arditurri are associated with the landscape and former transport routes, while the castle, hospital and church offer different historical perspectives. The annual patron saint festivities also provide a set date for planning your trip.
Natural landscapes and a former railway line
Around 3,000 hectares of the municipality of Oiartzun lie within Aiako Harria Nature Park. In 2013, the Basque Government designated the Aiako Harria area as a Special Area of Conservation of the European Union. The Vía Verde de Arditurri crosses the entire municipality, runs parallel to the Oiartzun River and follows a former railway line. Its route can therefore be viewed in relation both to today’s landscape and to its former use as a railway line. If you would rather focus your trip on nature and transport history than on individual buildings, the Vía Verde offers a distinct theme.
The Arditurri mining site can be reached on foot and by bicycle. As local conditions may change, it is advisable to check them before your visit. At the Momotegi farmhouse in Aiako Harria Nature Park, visitors can learn about raising ducks and geese and the artisanal production of products derived from them. The focus here is on animal husbandry and processing the resulting products—a different topic from the landscape and historic buildings.
Castle, hospital and church architecture
Beloaga is a castle of medieval origin. Among its surviving remains is a 19th-century liberal fort, built on the remains of the medieval castle during the Carlist Wars. A municipal notice dated 2 October 2024 reports on its restoration: the main structure was rebuilt, accessibility and safety were improved, and information panels about the fort’s history were installed for residents and visitors.
Alongside San Esteban Church, the Hospital and Basilica of San Juan form a 16th-century Renaissance building that served as a pilgrims’ hospital. This former purpose offers a different historical perspective from Beloaga’s military history. San Esteban de Lartaun Parish Church is characterised by a single-nave layout and a ribbed vault. A single-nave layout refers to a main space without side aisles; in a ribbed vault, the vault surfaces are divided by intersecting ribs. This makes it possible to distinguish the two features as forms of floor plan and ceiling.
House history, instruments and festival days
The Casa Museo Arizmendi enea offers another perspective on Oiartzun’s architectural history. The building dates from the 18th century; its structure and design were modified for the Arizmendi family. In 2020, it was declared cultural heritage of special interest. The history of this individual house thus stands alongside that of the religious and military buildings.
For those interested in musical instruments, Soinuenea adds a collection-based perspective to the architectural history: its collection comprises more than 400 instruments. More than 600 additional instruments are held in storage and can be studied by researchers. The figures refer to different holdings—the collection and the instruments in storage.
The Xanistebanak patron saint festivities take place every year from 2 to 6 August. If you want to plan your trip around the festival days, check the events calendar for your chosen year. This will help you match your stay to the stated festival period.
