Temisas combines a traditional hamlet with cultural heritage and hiking options. The Valle de Temisas lies in the highlands of Agüimes at an altitude of 650 metres and comprises the settlements of San Miguel, Corazón de Jesús and La Inmaculada. When planning your trip, you can consider the village setting, cultural events and tours as separate points of interest.

Valley and traditional hamlet

The hamlet of Temisas forms a compact group of buildings integrated into the landscape. Rectangular houses, load-bearing walls and gabled roofs identify it as an example of traditional Canarian architecture. The hamlet holds the title Caserío Canario Representativo, awarded by the Government of the Canary Islands. The award and the architectural features offer two concrete points of reference for understanding the village setting.

Olive grove and local production

Temisas is home to an olive grove considered the largest in the archipelago. Every year from September, the municipal olive mill in Agüimes produces the extra virgin olive oil Caserío de Temisas for local olive growers. It uses only olives from farmers who live in the municipality of Agüimes or from trees within the municipal area. The olive grove and the strictly defined origin of the olives used are distinct aspects of local olive culture.

Cultural heritage in Temisas and Agüimes

The Ermita de San Miguel in Temisas was built in 1730. In nearby Agüimes, Cuevas y Graneros de la Audiencia is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the Archaeological Zone category. The archaeological complex includes natural and artificial caves used as living spaces, cave areas used as burial sites, and rooms for domestic storage. It includes some of the few examples of artificial caves used as burial sites on Gran Canaria. The building history of Temisas and the archaeological evidence in nearby Agüimes can therefore be considered as distinct heritage topics.

Astronomy and planning your visit

The Observatorio Astronómico de Temisas is a cultural focal point for astronomy education, outreach and research, where amateur astronomers and professionals work together. To explore the night sky, the observatory offers laser-guided presentations, audiovisual displays, dome telescopes and other instruments. As of 27 August 2026, it was temporarily closed: a landslide following recent storms had damaged a section of the access road from the village of Temisas. Check access and the programme before visiting; access conditions may change.

Festivals and hikes

The celebrations in honour of San Miguel Arcángel take place from 10 to 29 September and include musical, sporting, cultural and traditional events, including a Romería. The specific dates and programme vary from year to year. On 29 September 2025, one day of festivities included a Diana Floreada, a livestock fair, a communal lunch, a procession of the patron saint and an evening dance. If your trip is focused on the celebrations, check the dates and programme for the year you plan to visit.

Nearby Risco Pintado, also known as La Audiencia, has a walking circuit of about 1 kilometre that takes around 90 minutes and is considered moderately difficult. Details of the heritage visit may change with the programme. One section of a circular hike through Temisas is rated for experts only; the route has a total elevation gain of 1,281 metres and long, continuous climbs. These details offer different guidance for planning: the Risco Pintado walk has a stated distance and duration, while the circular hike through Temisas has a difficulty rating and elevation profile. Check the current route description and conditions before setting out.
