If you are looking for a hotel in Vega De San Mateo, you can plan your stay around the things that interest you: strolls through the historic centre, trails in the mountain landscape, astronomy and a market selling handmade goods each offer a different perspective. The town’s history also offers tangible points of interest—from the church’s construction to its market tradition.

Historic Centre and Architectural History

The historic centre of the municipality of Vega de San Mateo is well suited to a stroll. Churches and buildings, picturesque streets, traditional shops and a variety of architectural styles shape the townscape. One of its notable buildings is the parish church of La Vega de San Mateo: it has two naves and a central bell tower designed by José Luján Pérez.

The bell is also part of the church’s history. Four years after the church was built, it was sent from Cuba by Canarian emigrants from Vega de San Mateo. Sala de Exposiciones La Caldereta offers a different historical connection. It is housed in a former single-family home dating from the first half of the 19th century. Here, you will find both religious architecture and a former residence now known as an exhibition space.

A religious tradition connects Vega de San Mateo with the Teror–San Mateo route: pilgrims from the town use it when they travel to the Fiesta del Pino on 8 September. This gives the route a distinct cultural significance alongside the walks through the town centre.

Trails and Landscape

The Siete Fuentes–San Mateo route begins within the protected landscape of Paisaje Protegido de las Cumbres. The area is known for its rich plant life and special endemic species. Before reaching the centre of San Mateo, the route passes cultivated land, old farmsteads, ponds and homes. It therefore leads from a protected landscape through an area shaped by agriculture and housing to the town. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

The Barranco de la Mina rises near San Mateo and is used for outdoor activities such as hiking and canyoning; it is also associated with the protected landscape of Paisaje Protegido de las Cumbres. If you plan to go canyoning, check local conditions. The Área recreativa Ana Lopéz recreation area lies in the higher parts of the municipality of San Mateo, in the island’s central mountain region and within the protected landscape. These places offer different ways to experience the landscape, and do not all involve the same activities.

Astronomy and Other Activities

The Centro Astronómico Municipal has an observation platform with 360-degree views of Gran Canaria’s summit region. Several permanent platforms are equipped with modern telescopes for observation workshops. The centre organises educational and stargazing activities for educational institutions, tourists and others interested in astronomy. Activities and opening dates are announced separately, so check in advance what is planned for your visit.

The Roque Saucillo Observatory does not have regular opening hours and does not offer museum visits. Its educational programmes are available to educational institutions by prior appointment. If you are interested, confirm the arrangements before visiting. The Centro Hípico de San Mateo offers excursions and holiday camps; schedules and services may change. These different offerings give you specific ideas for planning, but you should check the visitor requirements for each one.

Market and Weekend Visits

One of the attractions for weekend visitors is the Mercado Agrícola y Artesanal de Vega de San Mateo. The goods on offer include handmade items such as wicker baskets, Canarian knives, and leather and wood products; the selection may vary. The public market tradition began in the late 19th or early 20th century in connection with the livestock fair. The first fair and market were established in 1890. The market thus combines a present-day visitor attraction with a long-standing local tradition.

Practical Information

The municipal tourist information office is located in Sala de Exposiciones La Caldereta, C/ Dr. Ramírez Cabrera 9. Confirm the location before your visit. It is also worth checking dates and the visitor requirements for the activities mentioned when planning your trip—especially if you plan to include an astronomy activity or a visit to the observatory.
