Conil: Wine Country, Hiking Trails and History
Accommodation in Conil
Conil is one of seven settlements within the protected landscape of La Geria. Its wine-growing landscape, hiking trails and traces of local history give the destination a distinct character when choosing a suitable place to stay in a hotel on Lanzarote.
La Geria and the Location of Conil
In the landscape of La Geria, where Conil is located, grapevines and other fruit trees are cultivated in hollows dug into the lapilli. Semicircular stone walls provide shelter from the wind. The hollows and walls show how agriculture in La Geria has adapted to the landscape.
Conil lies on both sides of the road from Tías to La Geria. The Vereda de Conil connects the village with Tías. The views across the region are also part of the village's character: Conil is considered a viewpoint from which the landscape of La Geria can be seen as far as Fuerteventura.
Hiking Trails Between Vineyards and Volcanic Landscapes
The linear Conil–Montaña Negra hiking route runs from Plaza de Conil to Montaña Negra and is rated easy. It starts in Conil, next to the church and the Centro Cultural. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
The trail passes through vineyards and reaches a volcanic lava flow on the western slope of Montaña de Testeina. It also runs through the El Taro de Testeina winery. The grounds contain an archaeological site above ground. There is a semicircular structure made of stones stacked on top of one another, rising up to form a roof.
Old stone walls beneath the lava flows at El Taro de Testeina suggest that structures already existed there before the 18th-century eruptions. There are also hiking trails on Montaña de Conil. It is distinct from Montaña Negra, the destination of the named route.
Buildings and Local History
Conil has numerous buildings featuring Lanzarote's traditional architecture. The Ermita de la Magdalena is a small, private, single-nave chapel dating from the 17th century, attached to the home of its former owners. The Ermita del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús was built in 1863 by Mariano Stinga and Andrea Rodríguez. Hanging above its altar are an anonymous painting of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and a papier-mâché crucifix.
The Casinito de Conil is also part of the local cultural heritage: this ethnographically valuable structure has two rooms. Festive dances used to be held there, and the game La Santa was played. Its state of preservation is considered average.
Conil was first documented in 1618, when it was described as approximately thirty fanegas of farmland. During the Timanfaya eruptions, which began in 1730, Conil was among the affected settlements; parts of it were buried by sand and rubble. At that time, the village had 17 inhabitants. These different historical periods add the settlement's history to its architectural heritage.
Festivities in the Second Half of July
In the second half of July, Conil celebrates festivities in honour of Our Lady of La Magdalena and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The individual activities may vary from year to year. If you want to plan your trip around the festivities, check the dates for the relevant year.
