Playa Blanca: Beaches, Culture and Sea
Accommodation in Playa Blanca
If you are considering Playa Blanca as a destination for a hotel stay, its coastline, culture and nautical activities can help you decide whether it suits your interests. Almost two kilometers of beaches with facilities for visitors’ comfort lie within the town center. Historic buildings, an annual festival and various activities on the water complete the picture.
Beaches and Seafront Promenade
Playa de Playa Blanca beach has restaurants, a promenade and showers. The seafront promenade is ideal for a walk and for watching the sunset. There are also different stretches of beach within the town center: Playa Flamingo is on the west coast of Playa Blanca and is characterized by white sand and calm water.
Playa Dorada lies east of Playa Blanca. It is a semi-artificial beach with golden sand and clear water. Two breakwaters calm the waves there. The beaches described thus differ in their location, sand color and coastal character. If you are considering Playa Blanca primarily for its coastline, these are concrete points to keep in mind when planning your trip.
History and the Fiestas del Carmen
Castillo de Las Coloradas, also known as Torre de Las Coloradas or Torre del Águila, is a monument in Playa Blanca protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The tower was built between 1741 and 1744 as a defensive structure against incursions by the Berbers. It is considered a national monument from the 18th century and is included in Lanzarote’s catalog of historical and artistic heritage. Its different names can help you recognize the structure in descriptions under each of its names.
A recurring event in local life is the Fiestas del Carmen, which Playa Blanca celebrates every year in July. The festival includes a land procession on July 16, a sea procession the following day and a closing fireworks display. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, it is advisable to check the specific event dates.
Underwater World and Nautical Activities
The Museo Atlántico de Lanzarote is Europe’s first underwater art museum. Its underwater sculpture ensemble is located in the Bay of Las Coloradas. Dives to the museum from Playa Blanca take about 40 to 45 minutes and follow a recorded route between the sculptures. This approximate duration gives you an idea of how to fit the activity into your trip itinerary.
Nautical activities at Marina Rubicón include jet skiing, parasailing, introductory scuba diving and visits to the Museo Atlántico. The marina also offers various nautical options with or without a skipper or license, including electric boats, catamarans and sailboats. At Playa Dorada, you can go diving, rent jet skis and enjoy various water attractions. Playa Blanca therefore offers both activities centered on the underwater museum and activities at a beach.
The natural pools of Las Maretas are also an interesting feature for outings between Yaiza and Playa Blanca. Before swimming, you should check whether sea conditions are suitable. This is important to bear in mind when planning if you are considering the pools as a swimming destination.
Bus Connections in Playa Blanca
Several interurban bus routes connect Playa Blanca with other places in the municipality of Yaiza and with other areas of Lanzarote. There is also a local bus service. It starts at the bus station at 6:30 a.m. and returns there for its final service at 10:00 p.m. The interurban routes and local service meet different planning needs: you can find out about connections within the town as well as trips to other parts of the municipality and the island. If you need to travel at a specific time, it is worth checking the timetable.
